KOTRONIS Consulting Teams up with Dassault's Cloud-Based 3DEXPERIENCE

August 15th, 2019 by Susan Smith

James Kotronis, Founder & CEO, KOTRONIS Consulting, commented on the recent partnership between Kotronis and Dassault Systèmes and why they work primarily with Dassault in an interview with AECCafe Voice. In the following video, he provided insights into the relationship between the two companies at the Dassault 3DEXPERIENCE FORUM. A look at the new database driven approach to the Cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform as opposed to the traditional file based approach offers great advantage to the AEC industry.

  1. What does KOTRONIS bring to the table that is different from other consulting companies? Our depth of experience bridging across stakeholder boundaries in the AECO industry affords us the ability to provide a unique, holistic, systems engineering approach to complex problems. This holistic approach coupled with a deep understanding of how to leverage technology to solve n-dimensional problems is our core strength. Our clients get unprecedented visibility and understanding throughout the design and delivery process. Informed stakeholders make informed decisions yielding the best results
  2. Is Dassault Systèmes the only vendor that KOTRONIS works with, if not what are the others?
Yes, but we do use some other tools for data conversion and compatibility testing. We have to interface with a wide variety of systems as required by project stakeholders. For us, Dassault Systèmes provides a best in class tool set that offers both the flexibility and scalability to service clients from conceptual design through direct to fabrication and beyond.
  3. What are the benefits of using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the Cloud for users of Building Information Modeling? First, is simply that it is cloud based and incorporates robust administrative tools that support distributed teams in the AECO industry. Information can be structured to optimize collaboration between stakeholders. Second, it is database driven, not file based, which is a significant shift for the AECO industry and brings tremendous advantages for analysis and quantification of building data. Last, but certainly not least, is Dassault Systèmes’ cloud-based (Zero Code Tools) that truly democratize 3D information. Tools such as xGenerative Design and 3D Markup Engineer operate from tablets without installed code. You have to experience them to believe them.
  4. The architecture process is different than manufacturing and other industries, in terms of how long it takes to contract, design and construct a building, plus the operation and maintenance of the building. Can you speak to that difference, as you have said the effective processes that work for other industries Dassault Systèmes is involved in can be adopted by AEC? If we described an industry that has multi-disciplinary teams distributed globally. That is challenged with ever increasing complexity, shorter times to market and struggle with regulatory approvals. An industry which has been hamstrung by document centric communications. Which industry are we describing Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, Architecture, Construction, Building Operations? The answer is all of them. The difference is that many have begun to adopt a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to yield better results in shorter time. Architecture can and will be well served by MBSE.
  5. How much of the success in the building industry do you attribute to the actual technology and how much to the human side and processes? To us creativity (human side) and tools (technology) are two sides of the same coin when evaluating success in the building industry. Since the beginnings of architectural history, excellence has been achieved when these two things are working in harmony. And, true progress is made when both creativity and technology are pushed toward their limits. There is a renaissance coming in building industry and we are excited to see it unfold.
  6. Do you work with smaller projects as well? Yes, we have been involved in a number of small projects. In fact, even our large projects often contain small/niche projects within them. For me these small projects are some of the most intriguing because we get very close to the creative process/thinking of a few individuals. Better understanding of the individual creative process helps us immensely in defining frameworks for larger collaborative teams.
  7. Does KOTRONIS do the hands-on customization in companies or do they set the companies up to be able to do their own in-house work with processes? The short answer is both. Often we engage clients in a very hands-on manner. One, to understand their challenges but of equal importance is to immerse them in our approach and the platform. Once the initial stages of learning are well underway we actively step back to allow our clients room to grow while remaining close enough to support them through additional stages of development.
