Awards Finalists Present at Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2019

The annual Bentley Systems Year in Infrastructure Awards was held in Singapore this year at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Finalists and attendees gather to learn about the projects and ultimately to see who is awarded the winning distinction in each category. Categories include Buildings and Campuses, Road and Rail Asset Performance, Digital Cities, Bridges, Power Generation, Utilities and Industrial Asset Performance, 4D Construction Modeling, Reality Modeling, Mining and Offshore Engineering, Rail and Transit, Roads and Highways, Manufacturing, Water and Wastewater, and Communications and Utilities.

Over 440 organizations from around the globe submitted entries to be considered for the Year in Infrastructure 2019 Awards. Of those, jurors selected 54 finalists in 18 categories.

The following is a bird’s-eye view of one finalist project in each of three categories to give you an idea of what types of challenges the finalists faced in their quest for workable solutions, using Bentley products and services.

Detailed Design Tendering and Project Management Services for Establishment of 12 IT/Hi-Tech Parks in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority wanted to establish Hi-Tech/IT-Parks for 12 districts within each of Bangladesh’s eight administrative regions. The ultimate goal is to produce modern, hi-tech “green” campuses to offer comfortable environments with amenities in which entrepreneurs and others can collaborate. The capacity of the campuses are designed to facilitate more than 800 registered software companies as well as unregistered individuals to draw a new workforce to Bangladesh.

Voyants Solutions was to create the design for multi-tenant structures that were designed with the following factors in mind: create a prototype design for all 12 sites that was both futuristic and reflected the values and culture of Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh through their Digital Bangladesh campaign wanted an image that reflected this vision. The prototype design was inspired by the national flower of Bangladesh, the water lily. The connecting walkways, skywalks, plazas, and shallow water ponds and other water bodies took the shape of the flower. Each site was to have a different shape, size and typology, further complicated by the need for natural environments at each site such as the connected ponds and pools. The intention was to have each site be individual but consistent in its design of a campus spanning 12 locations ranging from 2.5 acres to 10 acres, with differing shapes and sizes and terrain challenges.

Vice President Architecture and Project Management, Swati Agarwal, said that the project was intended to bring people to the city of Bangladesh to work, as they didn’t have places such as offices to work in their own communities.

The campuses were to provide attractive, functional spaces to accommodate small and medium sized enterprises for innovation and technological development and to grow community within the city. Independent and shared office spaces, common facilities for conferences, meetings, exhibitions, interactive spaces, gaming zones, recreational facilities and auditoriums/media centers, and cafeterias are part of the original vision.

The project team used STAAD for complex framing, and OpenBuildings Designer for 3D visualization and integration of all structural and architectural design elements with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. They also used LumenRT.

The project team optimized design coordination using the Bentley applications, so that it could submit the schematic design 15 days early. An ROI of five times the initial investment was earned, with savings of 50% in design time using 60% fewer resources.

Chase Center and Warriors Mixed-Use Office and Retail Development

The San Francisco Bay Area’s most highly-anticipated development in the Mission Bay neighborhood is home to the Chase Center, one of nine construction projects underway there. The ground upon which the Chase Center sits was actually at one time the bay, said Virtual Design and Construction Manager Brian Nahas. The signature façade of the Center pays homage to the area’s nautical history, with bright white metal-panel rainscreen wrapped around the facility and sweeping curtainwall at the west and southeast atriums of the arena.

Mortensen | Clark are no strangers to stadium and/or mixed-use facility projects. The $1.2 billion sports and entertainment center will serve as home to the National Basketball Association’s  Golden State Warriors and host more than 200 events annually, including conventions, concerts, cultural, and community events. The Center is now ready for the 2019-2020 season, with two 11-story office buildings as a part of five structures supported by a shared podium.

The workflow for this project involved dividing the design into definable sections. This procedure helped the team members understand the relationship between the structure and the façade, and also the influence on the schedule progression and assembly logic. Model-driven with iterative simulation review for the project’s site logistics and critical path elements, the 4D construction model was critical to the project’s success.

Bentley SYNCHRO was used for the 4D construction model. With SYNCHRO the project team could track the progress of work completed against the model and the schedule at the same time. 4D is a critical component to how projects will get delivered and be operated. SYNCHRO allows project teams to collaborate in real time.

Application of Digitalization in Juijiang Smart Water Management Platform, Juijiang, China.

 A digital twin is defined as a replica of a living or non-living physical entity. By bridging the physical and virtual world, data is seamlessly transmitted so that the virtual entity or “twin” can exist simultaneously with the physical one.

Currently under construction in downtown Juijiang is a smart water management platform contracted by the Changjiang Ecological Environmental Protection Group and Shanghai Investigation, Design and Research Institute. The CNY 7.7 billion pilot project includes a sewage plant, supporting network and water ecological restoration.

The project team was tasked to include a water business application software, BIM engineering management software, network monitoring system, and a hydraulic model system.

Beginning with a simulation and modeling platform for decision management and disaster prevention, they implemented ContextCapture to produce a 3D reality model, to cover the project span of 220 square kilometers. The project team used OpenBuildings Designer to design the structures and OpenRoads to design the water supply and drainage systems, in addition to managing surveying and mapping. This effort became an iModel that was uploaded into the iModelHub cloud platform via ProjectWise iModel Bridge service, allowing for better data access and collaboration. The team reported that their labor costs were reduced by 80% and costs to the project reduced by 60%, with combined savings of about CNY 4 million.

Using the above Bentley tools, plus Descartes, LumenRT, Navigator, and OpenPlant, the project team was able to visualize, track change and perform analysis of their assets to provide a cost effective, successful outcome.
