Trimble SketchUp 2014 released

John Bacus, director of SketchUp product management, spoke about Trimble’s recent release of Trimble SketchUp 2014, the popular 3D modeling platform for architects, engineers, design and construction professionals. SketchUp 2014 features major enhancements to SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse—a world recognized large repository of free, high-quality, 3D content—as well as new tools that improve the classification of design objects, have more interoperability with other products used in BIM workflows, and make professional documentation more efficient.

Bentley MANAGEservices address project collaboration and work sharing

Brian Robins, director of business development for managed services at Bentley Systems, talked recently with AECCafe Voice about Bentley MANAGEservices, their solution to provision, manage, monitor, and support Bentley software solutions for architecture, engineering, and construction. “Managed services were quite popular in the 80s and 90s and then got overlooked,” said Robins. “Now they are coming to the forefront again, for several reasons.”

Users are briefed on how to get the most out of their software investment.

TurboSite v2.5 upgrade adds video markup to PDF and BIM support

Sefaira’s performance based design platform now includes daylighting analysis

EcoDesigner STAR from GRAPHISOFT for energy-efficient building design

The challenge of getting energy evaluations into a building information model has been puzzling developers for a long time now. GRAPHISOFT has offered some energy evaluation capability in its flagship product ArchiCAD, but now the company has announced EcoDesigner STAR to serve highly energy-efficient building design by turning ArchiCAD BIM models into multiple thermal zone Building Energy Models (BEM).

First Place Winner of Autodesk’s Excellence in Infrastructure – Denver International Airport Expansion

The 1st Place Winner from Autodesk’s Excellence in Infrastructure Competition this past fall was HNTB, for the Expansion of Denver International Airport, originally built in 1995. The project was started in 2008-09, and includes 519-room hotel, a rail line from downtown to a hotel, which was part of the original master plan of the airport when it was originally built. The expansion includes the integration of a rail line, new baggage handling system, and the new airport is being prefabbed with a new entry way, security checkpoints, baggage screening – all of that being developed with the hotel.

Denver International Airport embodies an “airport city” concept.

“You can see where the rail line comes in and the glass wave shape at the top is the new hotel project,” said Eddy Krygiel, architect at HNTB. “It’s all attaching to the south side of the airport. We moved over 1 million cubic feet of earth in excavation.”

Roundtripping with Trimble Field Points and Revit

Bryan Williams, segment manager, Field Solutions with the General Contractor Division and construction manager of Trimble Buildings, spoke with AECWeekly about the recently released Trimble Field Points software for construction field layout. This application makes it possible for building construction contractors to create layout points in their CAD models. By matching the digital design on the physical construction site with points created in the field, field layout work can become much more accurate and save time.
