Panzura offers cross-site collaboration with global locking file systems

Barry Phillips, the CMO of Panzura talked with AECCafe Voice about Panzura’s Global File System and subsequent involvement in the AEC industry, providing cross-site collaboration with their global locking file systems. Moving from CAD to BIM in a single office is not a problem, according to Phillips, but when you try to have project teams spread across distributed offices it doesn’t work. “There have been lots of attempts to solve this problem,” said Phillips. Collaboration is what drives the need for cloud storage.

Autodesk acquires an architectural firm

Autodesk recently made a very unusual acquisition: that of the architecture and design firm, The Living, owned by architect David Benjamin. This acquisition was made in order to create the new “first-of-its-kind” Autodesk Studio.

Newforma releases new edition of Project Center

In a conversation with Marge Hart, Director of Product Management, Newforma, AECCafe Voice learned about the newest release of Newforma Project Center.

According to the press release, Newforma announced the commercial release of the eleventh edition of Newforma Project Center. New functionality provides support for popular cloud storage providers, enables sharing of documents via Box and Dropbox, integrates with established EDMS solutions, and scales to the needs of large global AECO organizations. New features will allow customers to collaborate more easily and manage workflows for building information management (BIM) more efficiently. Newforma Project Center now integrates with Bentley ProjectWise, Microsoft SharePoint, and IBM FileNet, reinforcing its role as the “single pane of glass” for access to all project information.

Trimble Document Controller Standard for managing drawings and models

Duane Gleason, product manager, Vico Office at Trimble Building, and Marcel Broekmaat, market manager at Vico Office at Trimble Building, spoke recently about the release of Trimble Document Controller Standard, a standalone 2D/3D application designed for construction firms that are looking for a better way to manage drawings and models.  The new application allows project stakeholders to understand design changes and be able to manage issues that might increase cost or risk. Capabilities include: 2D/3D change management, issues tracking, integrated reporting, and the ability to map 2D documents to coordinated 3D models in a hybrid environment.

AIA 2014: The Story from the Exhibit Floor

The Exhibit Floor tells a part of the story of any architectural conference. At the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference in Chicago two weeks ago, you walk in, and the first booths you see contain windows, doors, facades, all necessary features of a built environment. Toward the back are the software vendors, which provide the design and conceptual tools to make the building a reality.

AIA 2014 Convention Keynotes, “Design with a Purpose”

In keeping with the theme of this year’s event, “Design with Purpose,” Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel opened the festivities at the AIA 2014 Convention in Chicago this past week with great enthusiasm for architectural innovation in Chicago. Emanuel also once served as White House Chief of Staff to President Obama, as well as served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives for Chicago’s 5th District. He previously served as a key member of the Clinton administration from 1993 to 1998, rising to serve as Senior Advisor to the President for Policy and Strategy.

Tekla BIM software used for construction on FIFA World Cup stadium

Tekla’s BIM software was instrumental in improving productivity for the firm Martifer Construções, a construction company charged with construction on the Arena Amazônia in Manaus, Brazil,  just one of the 10 world-class Brazilian football stadiums modeled for the FIFA World Cup with Tekla. Martifer Construções gained 20% and efficiency by 30% while successfully meeting the tight construction deadlines.
