Intergraph 2011 Golden Valve Award Winners

August 23rd, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

The 2011 Golden Valve Awards showcased innovative uses for SmartPlant® and SmartMarine Enterprise engineering design software. For the first time in the competition’s history, there was a tie for the “Best of Show” in the annual Intergraph Golden Valve Awards. COSCO Shipyard Group and Keppel FELS Limited shared the top honor. Both images were created using SmartMarine 3D and SmartPlant Review and depict an isometric view of a semi-submersible drilling rig.

The Golden Valve Awards competition is sponsored by Intergraph and recognizes the most innovative and well-executed uses of software supported by Intergraph Process, Power & Marine. The winners were announced on June 6, 2011, in Orlando, Florida at Hexagon 2011, Intergraph’s annual international users conference.

2 R’s Won’t Make Your U

August 22nd, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Engineering.Com

Architects and engineers spend a lot of time ensuring that the large buildings they design are well insulated, at least to code. But what if much of that insulation is wasted? New analysis shows that 2 R’s won’t make your U. Watch this informative video by Engineering.Com:

R value refers to the thermal resistance of a building material. The higher the R value, the more insulation the material provides. Most building designers simply provide enough insulation to meet the relevant building code or green building certification. New analysis shows that the R value of the material isn’t the only thing that affects how well a wall insulation system works. Common installation procedures can cut the effective R value in half. The culprit is thermal bridging. It’s a particular problem in the design of larger buildings that use steel and concrete studs and framing.

Steel is an excellent conductor, so any time you have steel running through the exterior curtain wall into the building, heat can follow that path either in or out of the building, essentially bypassing the insulation. This isn’t news to architects and structural engineers. What wasn’t common knowledge was how big the problem is, and how easy it is to fix.

By using sophisticated 3D thermal analysis, engineers at Morrison Hershfield working on the ASHRAE project determined that thermal bridging can result in more than double the expected heat loss. One common approach for installing insulation is with vertical Z-Girts that are in line with the steel studs. The alignment of the metal connection results in a very direct thermal bridge.

The ASHRAE study used 3D thermal modeling to follow the heat transfer across multiple types of girt connections. In addition to vertical Z Girts they modeled horizontal Z Girts, vertical and horizontal z Girts , and intermittent z Girts. As a result of this work, ASHRAE can develop new reference tables that will allow architects and engineers to truly understand the thermal performance of the buildings they design. And to improve the actual energy consumption, which is after all, the whole point.

What is new in Autodesk Navisworks 2012

April 19th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

Autodesk Navisworks 2012 accelerates BIM project review through integration, analysis, and communication enhancements. File interoperability improvements help boost productivity by supporting workflows between the latest enhancements in Autodesk Revit products and third-party applications. New user interface and API (application programming interface) for the Timeliner tool provide greater control and flexibility when working with 4D simulations. New multi-sheet 2D DWF support enables users to open, review and explore 2D data sets alongside 3D models.

Here are a series of videos showing new Navisworks functionality (on the next page):

What is new in AutoCAD Architecture 2012

April 19th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

The 2012 AutoCAD Family adds a more robust set of 3D modeling tools that enable improved surfacing and conceptual design functionality, expanded point cloud support and direct access to the AutoCAD WS application via the AutoCAD user interface to enable users to view, edit and share DWG drawings through a web browser or mobile device. Other enhancements provide faster start times, faster commands and overall improved product performance, and a premium graphics and visual experience.

AutoCAD Architecture 2012 now offers faster startup and drawing load times for more immediate access to tools and large drawing navigation. A new corner windows capability makes it easy to add a single window in the corner intersection of two walls.

See the video below for new features in AutoCAD Architecture 2012:

Intergraph 2010 User Conference

September 7th, 2010 by Sanjay Gangal

I attended the Intergraph 2010 conference last week in Las Vegas. It was held in the spanking new Casino resort called ‘Aria’ in the ‘City Center’. Aria is a beautiful hotel with great restaurants and the most high-tech rooms than I have ever stayed in before.

The conference was well-attended with over 2,000 attendees. Intergraph was very generous with free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and evening entertainment for all attendees. There were more than 50 partner booths and a number of educational sessions.

I listened to the keynotes by Halsey Wise (President & CEO) of Intergraph. He talked about how Intergraph has shown consistent financial performance with both revenue and profits growing for the last 7 years. He also mentioned that the customer satisfaction rating has gone up during the last 12 months. He also announced that he will leave Intergraph next month when merger with Hexagon is completed. He introduced Ola Rollén, President and CEO of Hexagon who will take over his role at Intergraph with the current heads of PP&M and SG&I divisions reporting to Ola. Ola then came on the stage and talked about the rationale for the merger.

Ola joined Hexagon in 2,000 and since then Hexagon has acquired more than 50 companies in last 10 years including Leica, ERDAS, and Novatel. It has 7,500 employees in 39 countries. Hexagon has traditionally been a ‘measurement’ company. With Intergraph’s acquisition it moves a little beyond that label.

I interviewed Mark Doherty, V.P. and CTO of the SG&I division. I also interviewed the following executives:

  1. Scott Warner, Director of GeoSpatial Services, Avineon
  2. Peter Schlegel, Managing Director, CAXperts
  3. Adian Laud, Consultant, Noumenon Consulting
  4. Brian Beha, Director of Partner Solutions, Pictometry
  5. Dale Lutz, CoFounder, Safe Software
  6. John Leet, Director of Marketing, Skire
  7. Carl Taylor, Business Manager, Tekla
