Penang Global City Center in Malaysia by Asymptote Architecture

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Article source: Asymptote Architecture

Penang Global City Center in Penang, Malaysia as designed by the award-winning, New York-based firm Asymptote under the leadership of architect Hani Rashid, will be a 21st-century symbol for Penang on both a local and global scale through the simultaneous embrace of natural landscape, contemporary urbanism and innovative, energy-efficient design. This project is an opportunity to create a new image for the city of Penang by creating a precinct that is complementary to the existing character of the city and takes advantage of the lushness of the surrounding mountainous landscape by pulling it into the urban fold. The intertwining of the two creates a new model for a rich and dynamic urban landscape.

University Library Utrecht (UBU) in the Netherlands by Wiel Arets Architects

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

The UBU, comparable to a data recorder, is more than a place where people can consult books; it is a place where they can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet other people without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates.

Red Office Building in Marseille, France by François Leclercq and Zakarian-Navelet

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Article source: François Leclercq and Zakarian-Navelet

The red office building is part of the global town planning project EUROMED in Marseille.  In an ill-asserted and growing-up environment our project chooses continuity and simplicity. Continuity is based on a permanent architectural dialogue with the renovated neighbourhood. Simplicity is achieved by restricted use of materials and creation of elementary volumes.

The intervention site is located in Lisbon’s historical centre, on the ground floor of a Pombalinian building. It is a very common type of warehouse in these buildings, characterized by a single space defined by three vaulted areas with stone masonry walls and solid brick domes. Its maximum height is 4,15m and it is 16 meters long, 5,50m wide, having a total area of 102 m2. One of the ceiling tops has direct contact with the street, via two doorways, while the other has contact with a ventilation patio.

“Hayrack” apartments in Cerklje, Slovenia by Ofis arhitekti

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Article source: Ofis arhitekti

The site is located on the edge of an alpine town called Cerklje (near Ljubljana Airport) with beautiful views of the surrounding fields and mountains. On the site there is a beautiful protected 300 year old lime-tree. The plan of the building is therefore L-shaped and embraces the green area around the tree. Most of the apartments also have beautiful views due to the courtyard opening onto a view of the surronding mountains. Apartments are social – they were sold to the Slovenian Housing Fund for young families at a price of 900 EUR/m2 which is extremely cheap. Therefore the budget had to be very limited (600 EUR/m2) and materials had to be simple and economic.

Attic apartment in Barcelona, Spain by Pepe Gascón

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Article source: Pepe Gascón

Refurbishment of a duplex attic apartment, whose floors were originally not connected. It is a rectangular, long, narrow and highly compartmentalized space, which called for unitary organization with a sequential layout of spaces. This together with the furnishings designed made the longitudinal axis more dynamic along its length. Taking advantage of the magnificent views the apartment boasts, the façade’s openings were maximized and optimized, affording the entrance of a constant flow of natural light.
