The location of the apartment block is in the centre of Nova Gorica (population 32.000) – Nova Gorica is situated in the west of Slovenia, adjacent to the Slovene – Italian border. It lies 92 meters above sea level and has very specific climate conditions – it is renowned as the hottest town in Slovenia during summer and also has very strong winds in winter. With its climate, vegetation and way of living the city has a definite Mediterranean character, where external shaded space has high importance.
The location of the site is on the edge of the planned 650 apartments which were finished a year earlier. However, these apartments differ from the previous as they were planned as social housing and were sold to the Slovenian Housing Fund. The given urban plot of the building was 4 floors high, 58 meters long and 15 in width. Since the orientation of the building is towards the busy highway the apartment openings, together with balconies were shifted to become 30 degrees window-wings towards the quieter and southern orientated side.

Architecture and technology have always evolved in an interactive way. The project for the Oeiras Forum consists in a dark ash exposed concrete plinth with glazed surfaces where the cultural public areas are located and a suspended space-frame metal structure building, in glass with metal fins providing sun control, where the municipality community services areas are located. The project has a central atrium that connects all the different spaces. The internal spaces are organized to provide for and climate comfort for its users.
We just received some new images for this project. So, here is the updated project.
If museums are turning into supermarkets, why then should department stores not turn into museums?
“The Galleria Cheonan responds to the current retail climate in Asia, where department stores also operate as social and semi-cultural meeting places. Because of this, the quality of the public spaces within the building was treated as an integral aspect of the design.”, Ben van Berkel
