Article source: Holabird & Root The Integrated Wellness Center combines what the client identifies as the six dimensions of wellness – intellectual, social, emotional, physical, occupational and spiritual. To advance these six principles, the university committed to combining recreational student activities (gym and fitness areas) with the health and wellness services (health clinic, campus pharmacy) under one roof, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to wellness.
The campus is located in the heart of the city at the bottom of a valley along the Mississippi river. The building is sited and oriented to take advantage of views to both the river bluffs and the surrounding campus. It is these views that connect the user of the building to the inspiring landscape and it is the building’s exterior design that promotes the activities within out to both the campus and community. To mirror the multidisciplinary approach of the program, the building was designed as one large room divided into multiple open levels. The suspended running track serves as a continuous ribbon that connects all of the spaces. Each level has a separate function but is visually connected to the larger room – impressing upon the individual user a feeling of belonging to a larger community. Contact Holabird & Root
