Triplex House in Nakano, Japan by LEVEL Architects

This project is a multiplex house that is composed  by basement floor + 3 stories. A child household live in the first floor, a parent household live in second floor, a grandmother household live in the third floor. And in the basement floor, there is a training room for Kendo which is a common hobby of the all families.

Structural form is box frame type reinforced concrete construction. In the basement floor, the floor height was planned 4m because of the limit height of this structure. The eyes is often caught to appearance of the cantilever of the second floor. But when you enter to the inside, get wise soon.

The space which is not able to think to be the house, is opened up by the courtyard passed through the four stories. The structure of cantilever is strained by the slab of the third floor, because of the volume of the second floor facing the courtyard. The outside walls the stones pasted are too heavy about the structure, but it give impression like a floating mass of the stones and provide added color to the RC walls.

Because of the different styles of live for each other, multiplex house has many problems that are dividing each space like the the compose the cooperative appartment, getting the light. Related to the requested area of a training room for Kendo in basement floor and the building coverage and dividing area of each floor, it was composed light and ventilation planning that are deciding each areaway as to become the comfortable space that is each floor.

In the second floor, the open living room faces to the areaway thorough from the courtyard, faces to the bed room each other.  In the courtyard, it were planted grasses, became the kindly space for the client’s favorite pet dog.

The space of cantilever of 3m is both the bed room and the eaves for the parking space in ground floor. Becouse of this cantilever, in the first floor, differently the light planning of other floor, light are got from the southeast not to the courtyard. Therefore it is ensured the rich deck terrace from through the livingroom.

In the third floor is for grand mother’s space, therefore it is barrier-free space as a matter of course and to be able to access to the washroom from both the livingroom and the bedroom, it is considered for the future’s life. And in the spacious deck terrace, it is able to see over the urban city of faraway.

In the training room of Kendo, it took great care. It was ensured heights of 3.5m to enable to wield a sword, additionally, its base of floor is composed the short pillar of steel with a cushion-like structure. To reduce the many moisture of due to the basement floor as much as possible, it was boldly set areaway to two-way, therefore, ventilation efficiency was greatly raised.

This areaway become the space for BBQ. Also become the space to spend time with their family. This areaway and its open ceiling become the space keeping the privacy and to be able to feel each presence, therefore it is able to spin the connections which tend to separate as multifamily.
