Article source: FRAMA Architects & Juliane Demel Serlachius Museum Gösta Extension Proposal by FRAMA Architects BDA FRAMA Architects main objective was to reduce the impact of the volume on the delicate site and to intertwine the building with the beautiful environment. Through the “heart and wings” concept the large building mass of 4700sqm is scattered around a central heart. The new building is split up into a number of squares that form a dialectic relationship towards the site and the existing Museum building. These square like building wings are arranged in a circular manner to form the central space, “the Heart” of the new Museum Extension. Joenniemi Manor, the existing museum building, is a very particular one of these wings as the tallest and oldest, its sublime presence is still untouched and engages in an interesting dialogue with the new clustered building addition that is cautiously connected by a barely visible underground passageway. The functional spaces of the Serlachius Museum Extension are centered, around a spectacular architectural heart. The light and generously spaced central gathering space hosts the foyer, shop, ticketing, the assembly hall, the open circulation towards the exhibition spaces and a direct connection to literally every part of the new museum. This very strong and beautiful space will serve as a central hub and identification point for visitors and staff alike. The glass roof creates an open space that almost appears as an outdoor area. Trees blur the relationship between inside and outside. Views and access points to the surrounding park will emphasize the buildings relation to its beautiful landscape surrounding. “The heart” functions like a market place or a spacious living room for any museum activity imaginable. All other spaces are attached to this heart, like building wings. This very simple concept is solving all demands of a modern museum building.  Exterior View The new addition to the Serlachius museum keeps its respect to its environment by creating a clustered and animated volume, that places itself naturally within the context of the landscape, thus creating spectacular interior spaces. These spaces are perfectly organized for any given exhibition activity within the building. This allows for a number of up to date museum didactics and contemporary exhibition layouts. The spatial worlds that are created by this architecture and the mysterious and at the same time confident cubature in the park stimulate an experience that is appropriate to the buildings content. The differentiated spatial sequences that render themselves perfect for a number of sophisticated and efficient exhibition designs also allow the visitor to experience multifaceted spatial encounters of high diversity. Even though, the building represents a humble but self-confident reaction to its environment, it has the power to exceed above the boundaries of Finland and therefore represents a perfect fit for the importance of the Serlachius collection and any museum concept at this site.  Main Exhibition Space FRAMA Architects BDA is an architectural design and research firm that operates within various cross disciplinary design fields. Model 02 FRAMA Architects render themselves independent of any design boundaries or methods: each encountered assignment is different and is treated as such. The guiding force behind their work follows a conceptually driven design approach leading to a comprehensive design strategy. Their design work is therefore a resultant of intense project oriented investigations that is also reflected in the active engagement of teaching, research and collaborating with different architecture schools. This integrated design attitude allows for the architecture to develop from the different parameters set by the client, site, location and the specific requirements of any given assignment. The way FRAMA Architects approach a task is, that possible problems are not seen as obstacles but rather chances and opportunities to develop innovative, yet tangible solutions for the world we would like to live in. FRAMA, the name of the office, is an abbreviation of “fresh rapid and miraculous architecture” as an ironic reflexion of what the office is trying to achive.  Model 03 Since its founding, the office of FRAMA Architects has been featured in various international book and journal publications and has also gained reputation through a number of exhibitions in Germany and abroad.  Model 04 Mark Mueckenheim is founder and principal of FRAMA Architects BDA in Duesseldorf Germany and the co-author of the book “Inspiration – Contemporary Design Method in Architecture” which will be released by BIS Publishers Amsterdam in 2011.  Model 05 He has lectured and acted as a guest critic at numerous international institutions, including The Royal College of Art and the Architectural Association in London England, The Angewandte Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, the University of Houston in Texas and the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SciArc) in Los Angeles, among many others. Since 2001, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design in Germany. Among other schools, he taught for more than six years at the RWTH Aachen, one of Germany’s leading universities. Since 2009, he is appointed as a guest professor for architectural design at the Technical University Munich.  Night View of Model Educated in Germany, the US and England, sponsored by a Fulbright scholarship and a DAAD grand, Mark Mückenheim received his Master of Architecture from Parsons School of Design, New York and his Graduate Diploma in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.  Night View of Model Before establishing his own architecture practice in 2001, he worked and collaborated with different architecture firms in Germany, USA and England. During this time, he gained extensive professional experience through working on a number of projects, among them the celebrated Kunsthaus in Graz (with SpacelabUK Peter Cook & Colin Fournier – London) and Scott Free, a film production company in Los Angeles for the directors Ridley and Tony Scott (with Barton Myers and Associates – Los Angeles).  Concept Mark Mückenheims diverse portfolio ranges from concrete architectural projects of different scales and complexity to “speculations” – architectural visions that cross the boundaries of the field, informing the design potential of his office. He received the highly regarded German Young Architect’s Design Award, Förderpreis NRW and the MACEF Design Award in Milan and was listed among the “top 10 under 40” German architects by the interactive architecture magazine NIB in Rome.  Entrance Hall His projects have been featured in various international books and journals, recent publications include participation in the books “Architectural Model – lead to design” and “Mobile Architecture” by DAMDI Architecture Publishing Co. Korea, “Future Architecture” a book publication by Linksbooks Barcelona and “Concept Architecture” by Rihan, Hong Kong. His work has also gained a wide reputation through a number of exhibitions in Germany and abroad most recently the house of architecture in Lille – France, the German Architecture center in Berlin and the 12th Architecture Biennale in Venice.
