Article source: Murphy/Jahn Architects Sony center comprises seven mixed-use buildings organized around the central forum. Three of these buildings are corporate headquarters, each located at the corners of the site. Sony Europanzentral relates to the Tiergarten, the Duetsche Bonn headquarters tower forms a marker on the Potsdamnerplatz, and the headquarters for Sanofi anchors the Philharmonie corner.
Each of these buildings derives their form and identity from the urban situation, site geometry and composition of the ensemble. These shapes inflect towards the Forum gates. Variations on the glazed skins further the individuality of these buildings, while maximizing daylight and interior-exterior relationships. The constructional concept deals with the application of a series of components. These emphasize the aspect of transparency, lightness and layering and use state-of-the-art technology. The skins employ sophisticated glass and lightweight steel technologies. The roof is an elliptical umbrella providing shading and protection from the elements. It is a heroic display of the latest state-of-the-art cable, membrane and glass technology. One third of the roof is glazed, assuring views to the outside, ecological and economical construction and desired contrast and interesting lighting. Two thirds are a cable-reinforced fiberglass membrane insuring transparency, lightweight, long life and economy. The Forum roof has a mitigating effect on the environment of the Forum and the surrounding buildings.
