The geometry of the project is at the same time the starting point and the leit motiv which joints all the space. Although it is easily recognizable as a roof, its scale doesn’t answer to what could be expected in a first view. It is a childhood house but it could have any other public use. We wanted it was clearly understood as the first pictures of a house all children draw and, once inside, everybody could discover the surprise of the volume.

Other times we’re just a quiet place to stop to rest and organize an evening drink. In others moments we need a technical support aspects of skiing and weather information and safety in the snow. Comes the need to create a place, a meeting point for snowboarders where to find and spend a few minutes before continuing their descent. SJE is based conceptually on the creation of this site. A project not on the edge of the track, but fully integrated with the path.

Our clients brief simply asked for a new family home with more light and space but they were  adamant that they did not want to move from the area. So, a new dwelling was designed to sit at  the bottom of their unloved and overgrown back garden. It is a small but prominent corner site,  bounded by a mixture of garden walls and back-land garage developments, exposed on its eastern  boundary by large open park and access road.

The 18 hectare site has had a life that has ebbed and flowed with the life of the family who have owned it for almost 30 years. Developed from the ground up into a small orchard by a growing family the farm is now retreating back to its natural form as the owners also wind down in retirement.
