Article source: Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp The conversion of the wellness area at ’ Hotel Felsenhof’ in Flachau (Salzburg, Austria) is part of a long term development concept which tranforms and adapts the existing structures of a locally grown familiy hotel into a contemporary hotel business through different modular phases. The main focus lies on a family friendly hotel which offers an easy, ecological and open minded atmosphere for young families spending their holidays in the alpine environment.  Shower Pipes (Image Courtesy Christian Knapp, Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp) The main structural material is oiled oak. It represents the regional and ecological context. A wooden ribbon that follows a geometric logic is enclosing the whole area. Starting as a facade it marks the extension of the older buildings. Developing through the interior, the wooden elements function as acoustic regulators, contain the main illumination and also grow structurally into the furnishing. The island like seating elements are made of a special, water resistant heavy duty foam and coating which are creating individual spacial situations to be utilised in different ways. The rest of the survaces and the swimmingpools are coated in discreet, white mosaic tiles.  View towards Swimmers Area (Image Courtesy Christian Knapp, Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp) Due to the client’ s specific demands of creating an exciting and family friendly atmosphere the Viennese design office Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp developed a design that envelops the space for human encounter, and the need for recreation and leisure time in a minimalistic statement formed of plain wood for the space and a playful filling for children and parents to interact. Abstract Office Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp / Office for Systemic Design is a design agency based in Vienna, Austria. Following a post- structuralistic point of view, their credo is the creation of systems not buildings. Each of their approaches into the fields of urbanism, architecture and design consider a wide range of aesthetic, social, economical and ecological aspects focusing on intelligent, clear and down to earth solutions.
