 Image Courtesy EGM architecten  Image Courtesy EGM architecten  Image Courtesy EGM architecten  Image Courtesy EGM architecten For the new building of the COZ (Geriatric and Hospital Psychiatric Centre) the Reinier van Arkel Group chose to use the entrance of the new general Jeroen Bosch Hospital as access point. The centre offers diagnostics, advice, consultation, treatment and accompaniment to adults and elderly people with psychiatric or psychosocial problems and requests for help. Often, signs are placed in front of hospitals, saying “Psychiatric Ward around the corner”. Here, this was not the desire. The former department PAAZ (Psychiatric Department of the General Hospital) and GAPZ (Geriatric Department of the Psychiatric Hospital) have got a place of their own just as any other specialism. In this way the stigmatization of psychiatrics is prevented.  Image Courtesy EGM architecten The location in relation to the hospital as well as the direct connection to it, creates a perfect starting point for the collaboration with the medical specialists in the hospital. The COZ has a small scale identity in relation to the Jeroen Bosch Hospital. The centre has four storeys, which in different steps relate to the surrounding nature. A transparent glass hall way creates the connection to the hospital.  Image Courtesy EGM architecten Also, in the building itself, various elements of the healing environment concept are integrated. Patios bring daylight deep into the building, glass walls on the first floor offer extra light income and views alternating to the gardens, the surrounding nature and the hospital.  Image Courtesy EGM architecten Along the main hall ways the vertical openings function as orientation points. The curtain walls with different coloured glass create recognizable “lampions”. In the hall ways of the treatment centre the serrated walls, with each their rhythm, help to give a sense of direction, making it easier for the visitor easily to orientate. Externally, the brick facades and the random window placement form a plastic and small scaled total.  Image Courtesy EGM architecten In the building the treatment, stay and supporting services are divided as much as possible. On the first floor are located the facility management area, an enclosed home group and two open home groups for adults, the separation department and the deepened hall for psychomotor therapy. On the first floor are the main entrance, the treatment centre and the knowledge centre. On the second floor are a closed and two open home groups for elderly people.
