LANDSCAPE, MEMORY, TRADITION and WATER for the FUTURE
NIEU WAter gaRDEN, a new landscape of water, meeting between urbanity and agriculture.
The proposal arises Niwu Water Garden by the ensounter of three main materials: water, city and farmland. In a scenic enclave of particular importance to the city of Leeuwarden an appropriate balance between these materials allows to think about a hybrid landscape which establishes a transition between rural and urban.
Thus become a new environment in which elements of the city (the traditional and the present) establish a proper dialogue with the existing agricultural plot and its associated infrastructure.

The site is located in the up and coming Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. In this residential neighborhood of two- and three-story row houses, the challenge was to design a new duplex residence that would respect and complement the historic context as well as provide uplifting spaces for the inhabitants.

For this particular project, I wanted to accomplish two things. The first was to combine opposing architectonics; the masonry structure which is the origin of the building technique and the skin structure which I have been trying on my projects. And the second was to innovate something that equips structure, function and heat environment altogether.A steel box is designed with the Japanese original module and it sizes 450mm×900mm. The Boxes are piled up with openings that become windows. Considering the heating environment inside, the depth of a steel box was decided as 300mm that serves as brise-soleil. The given depth blocks out the summer sun light and pulls in the winter sun into the house. In addition, a heat resistance material, a special ceramic-infused coating which we have applied for the past Penguin House project, is put on the steel plate. This also helps to solve the heating problem.

This project mandated the division of an awkwardly-configured bedroom into two distinct sleeping quarters. Because of the open character of the loft space and the existing tall ceilings, we approached the solution with the understanding that the new configuration would ultimately result in relatively small yet tall spaces. In light of this, we chose to bring down one’s visual perception of the spaces and created a separation which allowed for one dedicated (existing) window within each of the new rooms.
MoederscheimMoonen Architects recently delivered a new sports hall in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. The project is part of the development of a bigger sports area in the city where multiple sport clubs will move to in the near future.
Maier Hall is a multidisciplinary center for arts, humanities and instructional support programs located at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington. The building provides state-of-the-art instructional space for Math, English, Music and Fine Arts. It houses the College’s Learning Center and a 135-seat recital hall. Designed to create a place for students and faculty to engage in the College’s academic community, the facility serves the College’s mission of becoming a regional center for continuing and higher education.
The house is a family weekender located on approximately 100 acres in the granite belt roughly one hours drive north of Melbourne.
DESIGN
The obvious site for the house has panoramic views of the surrounding hills with the existing site access road approaching from the south. We created a circular driveway at the head of this road leading to covered car spaces, which radiate off the driveway, and provide sheltered access directly through the boots room or laundry on either side of the main entry door. The dwelling has three wings built around this central circular drive, bedroom / study wings along the east & west sides, with the main living, kitchen, dining and decks along the north. A gallery connects the three wings and main entry. The bedroom wings are mirrored geometric compressed cement sheet boxes with deep reveal windows providing shade and weather shelter. The main living, kitchen, dining and decks facing due north are under one long blade corrugated roof structure supported by high rustic timber trusses which are supported of a rammed earth blade wall. The rammed earth wall also separates these areas from the gallery walkway, which links all three wings and the building entries.
The Communes du Pays du Ried Brun community wished to build new offices to house Muntzenheim’s treasury, the former offices having become too cramped. The project consisted of utilizing 190m2 for the offices, which were to include a public reception area, archival premises, a cafeteria, as well as premises for the strong-lock. The site that was chosen is easily flooded, thus binding us to raise the building 80cm, and consequently to erect a staircase, and a ramp for the physically disabled, for access to the reception area.
The rear building of the house, dating from the early 20th century, is no longer adapted to the needs of the client or the demands of today’s living comfort. The new multipurpose room, with a maximum sense of space, the various activities taken in the foreground and absent themselves more to draw. Central to the room, the table is placed as a symbol of everyday life. The three monumental canvases perforate the new room and light each on a different part of the house and its surroundings.
