The commission concerns the construction of a sustainable gas station and related program for Avia Marees close to the ‘Afsluitdijk’ and the exit of motorway A7 in Den Oever. The gas station is located on a prominent location in the industrial area between provincial roald N99 and the mainroad to Den Oever. The location will combine the weekly or even daily practice of fuelling with office space and a fishmonger. This development proposes principles such as sustainability, specific crafts from the region and climate neutral buildings. On a long plot, a two sided orientated design expresses a division in key elements. This results in a visual en physic relation between the Havenweg (the main road to the village) and the N99. From the Havenweg the building could be described as inviting and form the N99 it is highly visible and spatially interesting.

The tank island, the operating point of the fuel pumps, could be considered as the heart of the station. Besides the conventional fuel, alternative and clean fuels are included in the product range. Over the complete program an envelope is folded, which covers the tank island, and the related functions: office and the car wash. The envelope is designed as a layered facade; wooden slats covering coloured cladding. This layered construction adds relief and let the typical corporate color shine through in a subtle way. The main supporting construction consits of walls of cross laminated timber panels, wooden ribbed floor slabs and structural engineerd timber roofelements.

These pre-fabricated elements reduce the construction period and contributes to the interior’s special appearance. A natural flax product is applied for the insulation. The wooden construction, the insulation and the the high quality installations makes the design sustainable and climate neutral. AVIA Marees realizes an innovative climate station that combines the poetic and soft landscape of Wieringen with a utilitarian and robust character.
