Team BIG+FREAKS freearchitects, dUCKS scéno, Khephren Ingénierie, VPEAS, ALTO Ingénierie, Vincent Hedont, PBNL, Mryk & Moriceau, Ph.A wins the competition to design a new 12 000 m2 cultural center on the riverfront of Bordeaux, merging three cultural institutions into one single building.
The new Maison de l’Économie Créative et de la Culture en Aquitaine, MÉCA, located on the historical riverfront of Bordeaux will house three regional visual and performing arts agencies FRAC, the ECLA and the OARA in one single institution. The Regional Council of Bordeaux selected the winning team among proposals from SANAA, the Toulouse-based firm W-Architectures and Bordeaux-based FLINT.
The Frankfurt Städel Museum is about to undergo the largest expansion ever in the course of its nearly two-hundred-year history – with regard to its architecture and its collection alike. In the autumn of 2009, in conjunction with numerous important additions to the museum’s holdings, work commenced on the construction of an annex for the presentation of contemporary art. Designed by the architectural firm schneider+schumacher of Frankfurt, this extension will open its doors for the first time on 25 and 26 February with two Open House days and a big public celebration.

Shiny wooden paneled walls surround the interior along with the counter. These panels exude dignity and the texture create tension and high-quality mood. “Ginza Steak TAJIMA” made its grand opening at Ginza, Tokyo, one of the leading cities in Japan. Initially, our client’s needs were to create high quality and dignity interior using genuine materials. After having further hearing, we noticed that our client was always very familiar with stones. Firstly, we proposed the idea of using solid board panels instead of stones to constitute the walls. As for the base, we cut out big horse chestnut solid board panels into 13 mm thickness, commonly used for making counters with one piece. These specially-manufactured panels have different grain pattern expressions.
The design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), which was honoured with first prize in an international competition, converts a former industrial heritage building to the north of Bologna into a modern technology park. The factory facilities of the former tobacco monopoly, designed by the famous Italian engineer and architect Pier Luigi Nervi are carefully modernised and converted to accommodate new functions. The additional new buildings carry the signature of the listed historic buildings dating from the 1940s, albeit in modern form.
The project is the renovation of a pre-war townhouse on an historic block in Chelsea, NYC, focusing on the garden apartment. The garden duplex was originally dark and in disrepair: a cramped kitchen had inadequate windows facing the rear yard, the parlor level, with ornate molding, and etched glass, opened clumsily into a bedroom facing a rear yard.
The commission (September 2007) consisted of a detached house on a plot in residential area Overgooi in Almere, at the foot of the Gooimeer dike. The family wanted, except for transparency and privacy, a strong integration of the plot with the building as opposed to a block on a mound. The house is a two-story building with traditional planning, living on the ground floor and sleeping upstairs. The building is divided into three parts: a two-storey main entrance building facing the front garden, a patio and connecting hallway as an open area in between, and finally the living area in a one-story volume in the middle of the plot.
A world-class concert hall designed for the Kaokaoshina New District – an emerging art and cultural hub in Ordos City, in southwestern Inner Mongolia – is equipped to attract renowned performers from around the globe. Located at the intersection of two of the city’s major arteries, the concert hall is both integral to the art and culture of the district and an iconic gateway to the city itself.
The purpose was to reconnect with the identity of Roger Vivier’s house in order to accompany the renewal of the brand that created, among other things, the stiletto heel in 1954.
The work was led in close relationship with Inès de la Fressange, director of the brand and Bruno Frisoni, artistic director. We aimed to give each room the prestige of Roger Vivier’s history and a contemporary design vision. Based on the Faubourg Saint-Honoré Street, the store spreads on 3 levels in a sweet and luminous atmosphere. Outside, the screen shop-window made of “priva light” let the ground floor appear through the frames of various windows.
The footbridge seeks only to be a link between the two banks of the river Segre where it crosses the city of Lleida. Understood more as an itinerary than as a place in which to remain, the new footbridge at no time pretends to erase the perception of being suspended at a great height over the riverbed. This thought has led to an adjusted dimensioning that make compatible pedestrian and bicycle traffic with that of service vehicles. In this way, the crossing of the entire width of the river is solved with two single pillars and no other support.
Between forward-facing high-rise buildings and blast furnaces of the past the new Steelyard square forms the center of Belval Ouest, a city development project which is currently constructed in Luxembourg on the grounds of a former steel mill. The disused industrial site´s atmosphere was characterized by wideness and roughness as well as pioneer plants such as mosses and birch. The former situation is necessarily literally covered by the new use and new design. Our major goal was it to let the now hidden qualities shine through the redesign.
