Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Article source: Coop Himmelb(l)au

The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, is situated directly on the Caspian Sea and the site for the Chess Academy is located at the sea promenade of the urban coast line of the city. The sculptural design for the Chess Academy has the potential to orientate the building towards the City and towards the Caspian Sea at the same time and create a visible icon for the Chess Community of Azerbaijan.

Article source: Alexandre loureiro

I’m a Portuguese architect and last December i was awarded the 1st prize Work In Progress competition at the Project CASA’12 event in Porto, Portugal, with the project FoFoFo commissioned by FORBO FLOORING.FoFoFo (stands for Folfing Forbo Folie) is a small stand for a Linoleum producer company – FORBO FLOORING – with the objective to promoted the characteristics of their product (linoleum in this case). The natural material (linoleum) is cutted into 22m long stripes to assure a continuous and voluptuous 3 dimensional pattern that is to be hanged on both walls and ceiling of the MDF structure. The simple joinery of the structure requires no glues, screws or nails due to process of using CNC of the parts (could be interesting to send photos of the assembly process).

Vallpala Sports Centre in Castellón, Spain by Vicente Salvador + Ignacio Vidal arquitectos

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Article source: Vicente Salvador + Ignacio Vidal arquitectos

The sports facility completes a public urban block where it stands currently theHonoriGarciaHigh School, the local council sports pavilion and the local council swimming pool building.  Given that the entirety of the block is publicly owned, the first thing to establish was the definition of the site to occupy.  With the aim of getting a well rationalised and arranged organisation of built elements and resulting in-between spaces, it was decided to establish the length of the existing sports pavilion as the width of the site, leaving at either side pedestrian streets to access the neighbouring facilities.

Indian Paintbrush Residence in Jackson, Wyoming by Carney Logan Burke Architects

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Article source: Carney Logan Burke Architects

Situated in an aspen grove near Jackson, Wyoming, this residence was designed to make the most of both the small buildable area of the site and the modest budget allotted for construction. For ten years prior to building, the clients had lived on the site in a dark 1970s log cabin. The project parameters included a closer connection between the new form and its beautiful site, a less overtly traditional western vernacular expression than that of the old residence, as well as an adherence to a very tight budget of $160 / square foot – a major challenge in the inflated economy of a resort community.

MOA – Museum of Architecture in London by Seeding Office-Architecture

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Article source: Seeding Office-Architecture

Sir G. Scott, the man who designed Battersea Power Station, was a master in blending gothic tradition with modernism and he created some of the most legendary landmarks of his time. The concept design for the new Museum Of Architecture aims to engage the deepest roots of this listed building to a unique, sustainable and contemporary design. A building that is the symbol and beholder of an extraordinary history demands an approach which evokes, inspires and remembers its stories by retaining the visual memory of all its art deco details, including its cracked walls, marks, broken beams, etc.

Fish Creek Compound Guest House in Wilson, Wyoming by Carney Logan Burke Architects

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Article source: Carney Logan Burke Architects

This 950 square foot guesthouse is the first phase of a master plan for a 5-acre sloping wooded property owned by the architect and his wife in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The design was intended to immerse the owners in the experience of the forest both visually and aurally. Through its siting near a stream that provides the sound of rushing water, and large windows that open the intimately scaled rooms to the outside, the house creates the feeling of actually being in the woods.
