“DO IT BEFORE NOT AFTER” – floating structures operation – A new way to think at disaster. The worlds is becoming more and more sensitive to the climate changing, that, according to the most reputed studies, will have heavy and often dramatic effects on the earth and on us. Recently very well known dramatic events pushed the citizens, the governments and the organizations to think new and more appropriate strategies in order to provide relief to the population’s victims of these catastrophic natural events. This is the aim of this competition too.
Youth United for Change, a teenage activist group in this distressed urban neighborhood, was instrumental in charging the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) to create a smaller high school that would encourage students to graduate rather than drop out with little hope for the future. Coupled with this request was their desire for “a green school” that would provide a bright, healthy learning environment, in contrast to their home living conditions.

Located within the State of Iowa Capitol Complex, this project is an infill development on the 6-acre site of a former landfill. As a gateway to the complex at its Southeast corner, the project is a figural and literal threshold to the powerful example of government — supported by location and by its demonstration of replicable strategies for performance and savings. It further proves that the challenge of elegant design and exemplary performance can be solved even within limited budgets.

During the January of 2007, the construction works of a secondary pipe of the water distribution mains in Segarra-Garrigues system, caused an unexpected appearance of archaeological ruins from an ancient construction for 4.800 years in Seró (Artesa de Segre, Lleida). The most important point of this discovery was the megalithic nature of sandstone slabs and specially the accuracy of geometrical decoration sculpted. Stones with soft relief that, at the same time, were parts of ancient statues reused from a previous sculptural monument.
The design of the new Vancouver Convention Centre West presented an opportunity to fully engage the urban ecosystem at the intersection of a vibrant downtown core and one of the most spectacular natural ecosystems in North America. Certified LEED Canada Platinum, the project weaves together architecture, interior architecture, and urban design in a unified whole that functions as a living part of both the city and the harbor.
Located in an old downtown neighborhood in Racine, Wisconsin, this house for a young family demonstrates how a small, sustainable residence built with a moderate budget can fit into a rust belt city suffering from decades of economic decline.
A monumental coach house annex stables from 1760 is converted into a spacious house. A mishmash of built curiosities from previous renovations is removed. In this way the historical elements and large spaces return. The stable, still complete with hay racks, stone troughs and iron cast horse heads, is used as a living room.
The 140m2 house is located on a small plot in IJburg; a recently developed suburb of the city of Amsterdam. The house is designed as a vertical garden giving space to flora and fauna to grow in a densely urbanized area. Closed private spaces contrast with open collective spaces, that seem to have been ‘carved out’ from the solid volume as a continuous transparent void. In this way the interior space is visually and physically connected to the street, the garden and roof terraces.
The Sempla offices in Turin are housed in an old factory that has been transformed. We decided to crystallize and preserve the traces of the past and its degradation, enhancing the power of the contrast between the new and the old.
During2010 Red Shirt Riot, many of Bangkok’s public buildings were set on fire. Podium of ZEN Tower in Central World Complex was totally unrecognizable. Smoke and heat went upward and destroy all furniture and finishing of all interior space on the tower. ZENSE, thena newly-opened yet one of the hippest Restaurants/Bars in the city, situated on ZEN Tower top floor, was one of the casualties of this unrest. As the original designer, DEPT was called to give ZENSE another life after the riot.
