Sumit Singhal

The interior design of the project, including a Bolidt flooring system, also features on the shortlist for an INSIDE Award in the Education category.  Image Courtesy © Bolidt The Sports College is a partnership between Eindhoven city council and Fontys and accommodates 2000 students taking courses that used to be taught in Sittard and Tilburg. Situated in Genneper Parken, a large park area with one of the highest concentrations of sporting facilities in the Netherlands, the project has confirmed Eindhoven’s reputation as a sporting city.  Image Courtesy © Bolidt Facilities at the 16,500 m2 sports complex include five sports halls, a 15-metre-high climbing gym, various lecture rooms and an underground car park. It is an active, dynamic learning environment, which is underlined by the design. The climbing gym is the highest element of the complex and has a large glass window through which the climbers can already be seen from afar. The complex has been designed to encourage maximum interaction between sports and education — from the parking areas, study rooms, entrance hall and the restaurant you can look into the sports halls, for instance. At the same time, the educational part can be completely closed off, so that only the sports halls can be made available to sports clubs or for sporting events.  Image Courtesy © Bolidt A special feature of this project is that Mecanoo has carried the sports theme throughout the school. Sporting figures are depicted on the outer façade and as murals on interior walls. All the floors have been line marked, so that the theme is also apparent in the floors. The intricate patterns of intersecting lines posed a challenge to Bolidt, but Mecanoo was very enthusiastic about the result.
