Jornalista Mário Filho Stadium in Maracanã, Brazil by Fernandes Arquitetos Associados

Friday, November 15th, 2013

Article source: Fernandes Arquitetos Associados

The choice for Brazil as host country of World Cup 2014, and the automatic assurance that Maracanã Stadium would be the stage” of the final match (even before the official definition), were the departing points of the need for preparing a project that modernized and preserved the renowned stadium. The differential was the proposal of making the arena as modern and efficient as the best ones in the world, associated to a brand built during more than 60 years of history and symbolism.

The Rock Creek meets the Potomac in a thin peninsula. It’s the site of a lifetime. The needle with water on three sides commands a spectacular view of such landmarks as Georgetown, Watergate and the Kennedy Center. The protruding setting called for an emblematic building, illuminating the idea of the open society.

Article source: Marte.Marte Architects

A group of middle-class houses, mainly built in the first half of the 20th century, are located above the Herz-Jesu church at the foot of the prominent Pfänder mountainside in Bregenz. The size of the house blends in with the other sporadic, villa-like houses, and the compact, square exposed concrete structure has identical facades on all sides, except for the west side of the house facing the lake.

Article source: Frank Harmon Architect PA

United Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, needed a 5136-square-foot field house for an Olympic-sized soccer field built for employees and their families. The structure needed to provide changing areas, showers, and restrooms for two teams of 10 to 12 people, as well as a gathering area with a fireplace. The structure also had to accommodate necessary support spaces—maintenance/storage room, mechanical/electrical rooms—and each changing room needed a janitor’s closet.

SEATTLE – Construction of the new $6.6 million Wagner Education Center at The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) is scheduled to begin this winter. Designed by award-winning Seattle architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, the building harkens back to historic Northwest boatbuilding facilities while at the same time serves as a modern front door for the growing museum, Lake Union Park and the surrounding South Lake Union neighborhood. Kundig’s interest in creating shape-shifting structures will be evident in the Wagner Education Center, where large windows flank interior spaces and movable exterior panels shift up or down to allow for the control of natural light and open or close the building.

House Dukken by Werner van der Meulen

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Article source: Werner van der Meulen

The clients brief was for a spacious home that expressed its appreciation for outdoor living. An open plan and practical house that lived out onto the garden was of utmost importance to them. Consequently the design developed into a layout that encouraged such a lifestyle. With views to the garden from almost every room, and large living areas that seamlessly flowed out onto the covered patio, this home merges the thresholds between inside and outside.
