Sports Hall ‘De Smeltkroes’ in Liessel, The Netherlands by Slangen+Koenis Architects

The sports hall was commissioned by a group of sports clubs; a football club, a netball club and a volleyball club. The combined effort of this group – for example with volunteering construction workers – made it possible to construct this building on a very tight budget. For us the challenge was to design a building that would house all the clubs, could be used both separately and simultaneously by the different users and still be a notable landmark for the small community of Liessel. By combining parts of the functions of the original program and the newly designed flexible spaces, we were able to reduce the total gross floor area and thereby the total building cost.

The result is a building with a square layout with the sports hall in the centre. This higher volume is surrounded by the other functions in lower volumes extending outwards to all four directions. By doing this the different functions – and clubs – in the building are recognizable whilst together they form a unique ensemble. The simple layout of the floor plan provides maximum visibility between the different functions in the building; the sports hall, the dressing room area for the indoor sports, the dressing room area for the outdoor sports and a café as well as on the sport fields outside.

The building is finished with a metal cladding facade with a bronze colored coating. The different sizes and angles of the panels in combination with the reflective coating gives the building a dynamic appearance while passing it by. The carefully designed building fits perfectly in the surrounding rural landscape.
