The Missouri Heights Residence project began with an interesting client, an amazing site and a goal for the ultimate in eco-conscious architectural design. Built on a 36-acre lot with majestic views of the Roaring Fork Valley, the “Mountain Modern” home is strongly focused on energy efficiency. The property is south facing to maximize solar access.
The construction of the structures uses a number of unique sustainable strategies including consideration of the natural land grade, reused and recycled materials, and strategically engineered overhangs that capture indirect light for heating and window orientation based on the prevailing winds to offer cooling in the summer. The modern barn houses all of the solar energy for the house and doubles as a wood shop for the client.
The main living area opens into the dining and kitchen spaces giving the home an excellent harmony and flow of energy. The private spaces of the home include the upper floor master and its covered deck , along with the lower level guest quarters that follow the natural site grade to a lower walk out patio. Tucked into the most private corner of the home, taking advantage of the views of the sunset and the more diffuse northern light, is a yoga studio. The home has a very organic feel with a great deal of usable outdoor space to enjoy.
