Sumit Singhal loves modern architecture. He comes from a family of builders who have built more than 20 projects in the last ten years near Delhi in India. Article source: RARE architecture Porte 12 designers, award wining studio RARE architecture, conceived a precise and textured design interpretation of the sleek and exacting cuisine of chef Vincent Crepel’s new restaurant. Housed in a former sewing and lingerie workshop in Paris’s new culinary district, Porte 12 is a contemporary ode to craftsmanship and the refinement of manual labor through both the design and its young chef’s cuisine. Top ten of the best restaurants in the world, the chef/artist André Chiang of Restaurant ANDRE in Singapore, is the helping force behind the “bistronomique” adventure of his longtime protégé.  Image Courtesy © RARE architecture Designers of the Michelin starred Viajante restaurant and 5* Town Hall Hotel in London, RARE devised a crafted design playing with the former lingerie workshop heritage of the site. Natural materials and rich tones merge with existing patina whilst Ligne Roset’s furniture pieces dialogue with the evocative copper braces and the signature installation – a cloud of lights. At the heart of the building with no visible façade, a faceted copper feature enigmatically marks the door, the Porte 12. Entering through the mirrored lobby, halos of the cloud of lights guide into the main room itself flooded with coppery light reflections and views toward the open kitchen. Upstairs the mezzanine offers a pre- dining area in a dark and warm ambiance. L’agence RARE architecture a conçu pour Porte 12 un dessin précis et texturé s’associant à la cuisine élégante et minutieuse du chef Vincent Crepel. Établi dans un ancien atelier de couture et de lingerie fine du 10ème arrondissement parisien, Porte 12 est une ode contemporaine à l’artisanat et à la délicatesse du travail manuel aussi bien dans le design des lieux que dans la cuisine sincère de son jeune chef. Considéré comme les dix meilleurs au monde, le chef-artiste André Chiang Restaurant ANDRE (Singapour) s’associe à son protégé de longue date dans cette aventure bistronomique.  Image Courtesy © RARE architecture Designers du restaurant étoilé Viajante et de l’hôtel 5* Town Hall Hotel à Londres, RARE a interprété avec légèreté l’héritage et la patine de l’ancien atelier de lingerie. Les matériaux naturels et les tons riches sont en dialogue avec les pièces soigneusement choisies de l’éditeur Ligne Roset. L’espace surmonté par les croisillons évocateurs en cuivre est signé part l’installation murale du nuage de lumières.  Image Courtesy © RARE architecture Au cœur du bâtiment sans façade visible, le restaurant se distingue depuis la rue par un énigmatiquement pliage de cuivre guidant vers la porte, le 12. En entrant à travers le sas de miroir, les halos du nuage de lumière guident vers la salle baignée de reflets cuivrés donnant sur la cuisine. A l’étage, la pénombre offre un espace pré-repas. A l’instar de la cuisine d’excellence, le dessin repose en subtilité sur des effets et la justesse des lignes et des matériaux. The office was co-founded by Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Nathalie Rozencwajg, both teachers at the prestigious AA school of London. The practice exercises an ethos of mixing their commissions with research and education to produce tailored work using new materials, innovative typologies and advanced modes of design and production. Research agendas broach multiple scale interventions within dense urban conditions, investigating the evolution of existing content through contemporary demands, projected future evolutions and technological advances. RARE is currently working on hospitality and commercial projects throughout Europe including UK, France, Belgium and the Arctic circle, as well as in South-East Asia. Highly commended, RARE has been distinguished amongst the best 21 emerging architectural practices worldwide as part of the WAN 21 for 21 Award. The office’s work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2010 and successively in 2011 for an Orthodox Church scheme in Paris. We carry an experimental approach through teaching, in particular at the Architectural Association, in London since 2004, the ENSAPL in France and Design Centre in Singapore.  Image Courtesy © RARE architecture Nathalie Rozencwajg A co-founding director of RARE, Nathalie graduated from the Architectural Association in London and has worked with Erick van Egeraat and Architecture Studio on projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East including among others the Onassis Opera House in Athens. In addition to her practice she has been Unit Master at the Architectural Association since 2004 and co-ordinates the AA visiting school in Singapore. Commended emerging woman architect of the year, Nathalie has a wide-ranging international experience and particular knowledge of sustainable and integrated design.  Image Courtesy © RARE architecture Michel da Costa Gonçalves Michel da Costa Gonçalves is a co-founding director of RARE and studied both in Spain and at France’s ENSAPL. He then went on to graduate from the Emergent Technologies & Design program at the Architectural Association in London. He has worked for Architecture Studio and Shigeru Ban on projects in Asia, Europe and the Middle East including the recently completed Pompidou Metz in France. Michel has taught in France and currently at the Architectural Association in London. Michel has particular experience of high profile buildings including specific engineering constraints and an interest in digital modelling and production tools.
