KANARI ISLAND in Piraeus, Greece by U67 (Fabio Gigone + Angela Gigliotti)

Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Article source: U67 (Fabio Gigone + Angela Gigliotti)

The Piraeus and the city of Athens together form a complex metropolitan area in which the presence of an archipelago of spaces emerges clearly from the dense low-rise fabrics’ layer of the houses. The islands of this archipelago could be considered the eminent mountains, hills, sporadic open spaces, thick industrial buffers and a myriad of gardens. In a way, here the Cyclades are mirrored to form a reverse: where the docking to one of those “islands” often means to get a breath. “Kanari Island” and “Ietionian Gate” are two twin islands placed next to the Piraeus Port, even if not directly connected with the sea and not even to each other, still their opposite topography makes the docking to them two completely different experiences. The relationship between these two islands is the framework in which this proposal has to be collocated. Both for the visitors and for the residents, the “Kanari Island” has a central role due to its position: it is a contemporary urban gate for the city.

AL Flat in Barcelona, Catalunya by Alventosa Morell Arquitectes

Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Article source: Alventosa Morell Arquitectes

The project consists of a total interior rehabilitation of a small flat, built at the beginning of the XX century.

Our challenge in this project was to redesign some spaces to get bigger and comfortable ambients.

It was in very bad conditions and with too many rooms, spaces, in a small net floor area; so the approach to the project has been to intervene as much as possible in its original rooms distribution.

In our city there are places, buildings, views that bring to mind images and memories.

They are “presences” that tell a story, often not known, linked to the dynamics of urban development of a city.

This is the example of the water tower of Fossano (Italy).

A water tank which is an important landmark in the city skyline.

Water has always been an important privilege for a city.
