The Deir Al Kalaa Country Club is located in historic BeitMeri, an area in the mountains of Lebanon long associated with leisure from the time of Romans. Situated on the mountainside leading up to BeitMeri, the site is a sloping terrain with stupendous views of the valley below and at some points the city of Beirut.  The country club approached us to request an expansion of the existing building to accommodate a hotel, dedicated spa, and additional pool.

Rather than work against the slope of the site, our proposal responds to this site data, and utilizes the dramatic sloping terrain to its advantage.  The hotel itself is conceived as a series of volumes, with volume representing a single room – arrayed along an arc roughly parallel the existing contours of the site.  The volumes are then methodically inserted into the sloping site below the club, and chamfered in order to create private outdoor terraces for each room. The result of this organizational system is a radial arrangement in which each and every room has a direct and unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains as well as a private terrace, walled off from the adjacent rooms.

In order to maintain the views from the existing country club, a large outdoor terrace is constructed to link the hotel and the country club, as well as conceal all the parking and circulation, which occurs underneath this terrace.  The additional amenities such as the pool and golf facilities are placed on this terrace, seamlessly unifying the proposed hotel and the existing country club.

The end result of this unique radial system, or matrix, is a design which successfully unites landscaping, architectural and interior design in one operation, while providing unobstructed, private views for each and every hotel room.  The building is a unified system, completely integrated into the landscape and the exiting country club.
