COURTYARD in Vienna, Austria by heri&salli

Wednesday, February 10th, 2016

Article source: heri&salli

The architectural studio heri&salli created an artificial landscape broken up into fragments for a courtyard of a private builder.

Some spaces are not made for beeing filled with nature. There is few light, the air is bad, the room by itself is     narrow and uncomfortable. Like in the case of a viennese building, dating back to the late nineteenth century, a very small and narrow courtyard served as ventilation for two vertically aranged wet areas. The quality is only functional, there is no added value.

Roncesvalles Accessible House in Toronto, Canada by Solares Architecture

Wednesday, February 10th, 2016

Article source: Solares Architecture

In 2013, a couple in their 50s, came to Solares Architecture with an important request – to transform their 1911 Toronto semi-detached home into a beautiful, modern, and, most importantly, accessible house.

In 2006, the husband and father of the household had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was soon in need of a mobility device. Once the family began looking into buying an accessible home, they realized how few there were on the market. Usually, accessible houses are built-as-needed, and the option of buying one is hugely expensive. Even a bungalow would need major renovation work to become fully accessible. After assessing these costs, the family decided to instead renovate their existing home, bought in 1989.

On December 3rd, the Dutch hostel chain ‘Stayokay’ opened the doors of their newest hostel development – a combination renovation and new construction set in the woodlands of Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. The centre piece of the project is a new multifunctional ‘Main Building’ where the hostel’s café and meeting spaces are located. These spaces are shared with two other recreational facilities that are housed under the same roof. On the first floor, the building facilitates the ‘Natuurpodium’, an education centre focused on the sustainable development of the Brabantse Wal. The building is also home to the ‘Klimbos’, an adventurous climbing route through the impressive trees of the surrounding forest.
