It is common to design a three-story building with a 60% building-to-land ratio and to design the fourth floor with a 20% building-to-land-ratio. However, the land area (142m2) was so small that 20% of the area was only 28.4m2. It was important to find alternatives to look for a maximum floor area ratio to meet what the building owner required without any loss.
Dali office is for the board of directors of Dali building. Both the owner and staffs are all women who like romance, colors and express a desire for an exciting but cosy working place, they also want the furniture of the old office could be utilized for the new one. With the position on the terrace of the 13 floor building, using natural ventilation was requested. Drexel University’s Hillel House is sheathed in local red brick as textured fabric draped in an abstract menorah that terraces down to the street. Arranged on four interconnected levels, the square building has thickened side walls which contain services, and four central columns which structure the middle, front and rear.
What does an authentic workplace look like? Designing an authentic office is not an easy task. Just like the terms “artist”, “poet” or “great lover”, these are titles that are given or need to be earned rather than being self-assigned.
Our attempt in creating an authentic workplace started off with our WorkVitamins methodology. This methodology was created by me, Martin van der Linden, principal of van der Architects, when I was an assistant researcher at Waseda Univeristy in 2001 here in Tokyo. I believes that architecture can be a catalyst for change in innovative environments, and this methodology – called “WorkVitamins” – is based on this idea.
Phase II of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum is conceived of as a natural extension of the original museum designed by Gehry Partners in 1993.
Phase II provides an additional 8,553 square feet of exhibition space on the north and east sides of the existing building.
On the southeast corner of the existing building, new gallery space is articulated as three rectangular volumes clad in the same brick as that used on the existing building. The new gallery space will provide the museum with space appropriate for the exhibition of works on paper, American art, and ceramics while animating the east side of the building that faces Coffman Memorial Plaza. These new galleries provide different scales and spatial relationships than the existing galleries, offering the museum increased flexibility in the planning of exhibitions.
Emigration House, a project by Steven Christensen Architecture of Santa Monica, California, has received a Special Mention distinction at the Architizer A+ Awards. The Architizer A+Awards received entries from over 100 countries, and its winners represent the best of architecture and design worldwide. The jury included such industry luminaries as Denise Scott Brown, Bjarke Ingels and Tom Kundig, as well as personalities from outside of architecture such as Tony Hsieh (CEO, Zappos), Yves Behar (Fuseproject), John Edelman (CEO, Design Within Reach), Cameron Sinclair (Architecture for Humanity) and Barry Bergdoll (MoMA). Special Mention awards were given to the top 15 percent of entries in each category, and other firms to receive the distinction include Morphosis, Neri&Hu, and OMA.
The 2½ years construction project to transform Chester’s Art Deco Odeon cinema into an international cultural centre has reached its completion on time and on budget, opening to the public on Thursday 11 May 2017.
