Challenge

The challenge was extreme: What to do with an urban space which is 10 x 90 metres in area, with minimal sunlight and a requirement of 200 bicycle parking places? This strip of city floor should give pedestrians (and cyclists!) a pleasant experience and, at the same time, provide a suitable entrance to the commercial areas on ground floor level

Centre Médical Et Esthétique (Cosem) Auber in Paris, France by Sky Factory, Inc.

Friday, June 16th, 2017

Article source: Sky Factory, Inc.

COSEM Auber hosts multiple practices in this 1,600 sq. m. (17,222 sq. ft.) facility, including a radiology imaging center located in the basement. The general reception lounge on the first floor is also located deep inside the building. While the interiors’ contemporary style underscored the clean geometry of the space, an effective solution was needed to neutralize the confined nature of the areas and transform them into sustainable spaces for human occupancy.

Clapham House in London by MW Architects

Friday, June 16th, 2017

Article source: MW Architects

This is a dramatic transformation of a small, semi-detached Victorian house. Despite being arranged over three floors, it was so shallow in depth that the proportions were cottage like.

We dropped the floor at lower ground level, and excavated a substantial portion of the garden to make space for a two-storey extension made predominantly in glass. The existing rear wall was flattened off and rebuilt in traditional London stock brick, in contrast with the contemporary glazing.

Colégio dos Plátanos in Sintra, Portugal by murmuro

Friday, June 16th, 2017

Article source: murmuro

Colégio dos Plátanos is a school in Sintra which educates children from the age of 3 to 14; the project consists of the expansion and reorganization of the school. Having acquired a set of low quality buildings east of the existing school, the client intended to demolish them and expand the school complex eastwards, adding a series of new classrooms, complementary spaces and sport facilities. During the design phase the client changed course and decided to maintain the east buildings and commissioned a new construction of smaller scale, connecting the east and west buildings that had to be built in two phases, allowing for a reduced investment since our country was facing an economic crisis and on the verge of the troika intervention (IMF, EC, ECB). This decision also required the development of an intermediate structural solution and controlled demolitions in order not to interrupt the daily school operation; only with the conclusion of the second phase will the entire complex be fully articulated.
