Beautiful House in London, England by Nacho Gias Studio with Tomas Gruber

Ma mama, A qui li rifrega Delacroix?! (But mum, who cares about Delacroix?!)

That was the question thrown by a child to his mum while I was waiting on a huge line for the Louvre Museum, in Paris. It made me smile until I realized that the child’s premise was full of truth, it kept a reality that we forget so often.

OPEN SANDNES City Hall in Norway by KAMJZ

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

Article source: KAMJZ

Enhancing Public Participation

The base for the design was the desire to create a free unrestricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a collaborative and cooperative management and decision making process with emphasis on the right to see the operations and activities of government at work. This supports government accountability and helps protect other necessary rights. The new City Hall of Sandnes would celebrate the concept of openness and transparency. Designed as a welcoming house which is as accessible as possible to it’s citizens and a building that lives up to the highest requirements for a modern, efficient and flexible office space. The volume required by the program would be adapted to the local urban conditions and modified to create connections with the surrounding area and bring the inhabitants closer to the city officials and their decision making process in the spirit of true participation. With all the office spaces continuously facing the streets a courtyard is created which would be the central area of the whole Havneparken masterplan. Walking and biking, crisscrossing from the streets, would be encouraged to reach the water promenade, creating a vibrant district for pedestrians and cyclists. The importance of the building in the area would be emphasized by it’s architectural exterior design where past tradition would be commemorated with a modern dynamic and universal outlook.

Rua Maria Loft in Lisbon, Portugal by KEMA studio

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

Article source: KEMA studio

Project is located in Anjos, Lisbon, Portugal, a zone where the industry mixes with housing buildings in a very dense urban tissue.

The pre-existing space had a function of carpentry, with a limited access to light and a small, lacking identity exterior space.

We decided to maintain as much as possible in the interior, except for the part of a back facade to let more natural daylight in and enforce the relation between interior-exterior.

Article source: Archiplanstudio

The project investigates the issues related to the ornament, such attitude can overcome the natural characteristics of the material exceeding the traditional areas. The concrete tables are adorned with imperfect decoration, made with white paint and the lighting in gauze plaster exhibit seams as elements that reinforce the character. The coating of the bench and stools with visible nails, refer to a dimension of the textile material, which seems sewn on the back support.

PRIMARY SCHOOL – LA COUYERE in France by Atelier 56S

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

Article source: Atelier 56S

The Site

The implantation of the project was dictated by the will of an urban re-organisation of the plots defined for the library, the TAP Hall, the multipurpose hall and the new school. Each access from the public space to these plots was located in a different area, we created a footpath from east to west that distributes every new public equipment in a single area. The implantation of the school to the east of the plot alongside the new library reinforces this new public alley. The project is based on the environment in its location, the minerality of the materials, the important surrounding vegetation, and the linear urban division divided by low stone walls located in the actual school’s playground.

Harbour Landscape by gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects

Article source: gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects

The project was organized by Claudia Ebert (Budersand Hotel), Sven Paulsen (Adler Shipping), Arne Weber (HC Hagemann) and Peter Ewaldsen (mussel fishers’ representative) in cooperation with the Hörnum municipality. In addition to its key commercial role, the harbor is an important tourist attraction in the municipality. In 2016, the northern and southern moles had to be blocked off because they were at risk of collapsing – with a serious impact on their commercial use and on tourism.
