Article source: TZOKAS architects The redesign of the space (previous name “Reload b/c”), which our architectural firm had undertaken in the past, so as, with the minimum changes and expenses, to achieve a brand new identity, was a great challenge for us. Even though the management would remain the same, the main idea of operating the café would change to transform it into a coffee grinder’s with café services. This operation should transform the café, which initially had an industrial design, to a place more open to the customers, making them feel warm and cosy. At the same time, customers could witness the process of making different kinds of coffee!  Image Courtesy © Athanasios TZOKAS and Alex GEORGIOU The furniture, even the bar, can change places according to the owner’s needs, in order to transform the bar into a barista school! The large shelf unit was designed to facilitate the display of goods of varying shapes and sizes by disposing the shelves in the unit diversely. So several ladder shape stands are hanging on the wall and shelves of equal size are replicated according to owners needs. We used simple but resistant materials such as wood, metal and stone. Petrol, yellow and warm tones was the key for our colour palette that all ages like. Yellow cables are flying on the ceiling in order to bring light into the right position. The main workbench was designed to fit and hide all the different tools needed by anyone working in the shop. On the top of it stands proudly the coffee roaster, the cold bruer, the grinders and the coffee machine. As a column in the middle divides the space, we dedicated half room in the production and the other half in the relaxation. A mirror creates an illusion that doubles the space and original black & white paintings related to the coffee, tea and chocolate are decorating the walls. Therefore, part of the existent kitchen would be moved there, undertaking the role of creating sweet pleasures. What else is best than a kitchen, open to the public, with domestic character and designed like a TV set, with the purpose of becoming an alluring attraction. The layout of the rooms was predetermined, with only one basic change: the replacement of the non-openable window with an openable one. Top quality material and high tech contrasting the old traditional furniture. Ergonomics for the chef was the basic prerequisite for this project. He must have everything under control all the time, as he is always exposed to the client and there is no space for errors. For that reason, the flexible shelf case was reproduced, along with the petrol walls and the wooden block texture, while the counter and the ceiling lights changed in colour, creating a 360º view for the customers. Here the customers are surrounded by the flavours, the smell of the roasted coffee and the instantly made sweets. A small oasis in the middle of the town. The experience is unique.
