Oyamadai House in Tokyo, Japan by frontofficetokyo

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

Article source: frontofficetokyo

With a flag shaped site, bound on every side by close neighbors, the understandable instinct might be to step away from the city, retreat behind walls where privacy is better assured. The family that purchased the site saw instead a chance to be as open as possible, using the small degree of isolation as an opportunity to connect to the metropolis from a slight remove. Although the neighbors are close, the tendency in Tokyo is to reject the city and build closed walls, ironically allowing the family to take the opposite stance and open their home without loss of privacy. In this way the site is not unlike a clearing in the midst of a forest.

The Proscenium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by Inrestudio

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

Article source: Inrestudio

The Proscenium is a small dessert restaurant located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. The project is the renovation of the ground floor of a former residential building that was built as part of a large block redevelopment completed in the 1990’s. Dozens of row houses forming the block were build with similar decorative elements such as Greekish columns and moldings, reflecting the developer’s intention for instant architectural potency. This kind of ephemeral dream is regarded as chimerical or is simply neglected nowadays, and indeed most of those original decorative elements have vanished through the recent years of overdevelopment in the central commercial district, during which time the next trend has already been discovered. This illustrates how an architectural style is written and rewritten during the frantic economic growth that major Vietnamese cities are currently undergoing. Our project began with a reflection on this rapid trend cycle and ended by reclaiming the abandoned design with a new design element slid into the building.

SeDu House in Puerto Varas, Chile by Pe+Br+Re arquitectos

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

Article source: Pe+Br+Re arquitectos

This house is located in Puerto Varas, on a plot that used to be an agricultural field. This places the house around a large native and non-native trees and an old countryside roads. This view coincides with the solar orientation towards the north.

Formally speaking, the house is designed from a large main volume with two main facades, the south and the north, facades that according to its character determines its expression in terms of composition, light and materiality. To the south a more private facade is defined towards the parking area with a clear window access. This controls the loss of privacy and temperature of the facade exposed to the street, the cold face of the house.

Diffuse borders: r.i. House in Quito, Ecuador by arquitectura x

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

Article source: arquitectura x

A project that started with uncertainties instead of the usual requirements for permanent living spaces, demanded we shifted the way we approached architecture.

The project as it is now, is a house; it became a house in the process, with its actual configuration decided during construction, its final purpose and use still undecided, its duration as a house uncertain.
