Hillside Midcentury in Seattle, Washington by SHED Architecture & Design

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Article source: SHED Architecture & Design

SHED Architecture & Design were approached by a young family looking for help redesigning their 1957 architect-designed home in the heart of Seattle. The design team set out to restore the home’s midcentury elements back to their original intent, while also integrating some of the firm’s own modern details.

Originally, the two floors of the home were mirrored, which was a common architectural approach in the 1950s. For this reason, SHED did not make any major structural changes but instead updated the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms to better align with the family’s living patterns.

South of Hangzhou, known as the name card of the ancient Hangzhou town, is the exact place where you will find the traditional Hangzhou restaurant SHANG MING TANG (the SMT).  Designed by YUDesigns, the SMT on the famous Qiutao Road shoulders the mission to promote the cultural spirit of “Hangzhou family cuisine”, one of the eight major Chinese cuisines.

By sorting and categorizing the abundant dishes and dining behaviors at the SMT, YUDeisigns intended to build a bridge between the tradition and modernism of Chinese catering culture, a quick path to the new customer groups.

Located in a small Cape Cod style house in the Seattle’s Meadowbrook neighborhood, the benefits of compartmentalization have been taken to a new spatial level with this innovative remodel designed by PMDA and built by Karlstrom Associates.

In order to maximize space while also creating a private sanctuary, the architects conceptualized of the home’s basement as a piece of furniture; specifically, a cabinet to contain both utilitarian functions and surprises.

The challenge was to create a new aesthetic universe associated to the cocktail bars but without forgetting the impressive brand of 30 taps, emphasizing the idea of the largest beer bar in Buenos Aires.

Nolintha Residence in Raleigh, North Carolina by in situ studio

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Article source: in situ studio

The Nolintha Residence is a renovation and small addition to an historic, 1920s four-square house in downtown Raleigh. Our clients, who are brother and sister, are successful restaurateurs. They wanted a house with separate bedroom spaces, shared living spaces, and that could accommodate large events. The Raleigh Historic District Commission (RHDC) required that the exterior front of the house remain largely unchanged and that the rear addition be simple enough to not distract from the historic structure. The interior, however, was completely reformed and is now washed with light, a stark contrast to the heavy historic façade.

The front of the house has been completely renovated, bringing the house back to it’s original 1920s four-square form, with glimpses of the new interior visible though refurbished historic windows, Image Courtesy © Keith Isaacs

Rin Wedding in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by District1architects

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Article source: District1architects

The project is about a building 6 meters wide and 13 meters long located on the main street Ho Van Hue, which has a variety of choice in wedding service in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. Although the street is approximately 500 meters long, both sides of it are full of shops specializing in wedding service. Most of them use aluminum panels to decorate the façade and to hang all kinds of advertising signs. Walking on this street, people would feel as if they were walking in a lane full of heavy shapes, high blocks which look like matched boxes standing next to each other.

Chuan’s Kitchen restaurant in Foshan, China by bentu

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Article source: bentu

As bamboo is the most common material and symbolic extraction of Sichuan culture, the restaurant takes Sichuan Qingshen’s Bamboo-weaving Art as the medium and carries out the intangible culture of Sichuan with tangible material. Recently, the restaurant “Chuan’s Kitchen”, designed by ∞ Mind, was awarded the Red Dot: Best of Best in the category of “Interior Architecture and Interior Design” and shortlisted by the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2018. Not long before, this project had also won iF Design Award 2018 in the category of “Interior Architecture”.

Catering industry in China has become saturated, business individuals rapidly emerge and decline. How will a restaurant contains contemporary folk art that rooted in traditional culture grow upright and unafraid on this land, where the rupture of ancient and modern cultures long exists? The inheritance and re-creation of intangible cultural heritage of traditional culture is the key.
