The new Uj Hidegkuti Nandor Stadium was inaugurated in October 2016 in Budapest, Hungary. Due to its unique architectural design the 5,000-seat capacity stadium, ranked to UEFA category 3, opens up new prospects in the world of football stadiums.

’FOOTBALL CAPSULE’ – THE NEW GENERATION OF STADIUMS

The essence of a stadium is the fine union of the pitch and of the stands embracing it. The carefully designed, closed seating bowl provides a perfect view and cauldron-like experience, which are essential conditions of the proper atmosphere. Therefore the seating bowls of stadiums with 20-80,000 spectators’ capacity show the typically closed, highly arched and dynamic form. Stadiums planned for less than 10,000 seating capacity are considered as small-sized or mini arenas. In these stadiums not only the spectators’ comfort level and the range of services are often on a lower level, but the form of the seating bowl and the whole appearance of the building are simplified and thus, the quality of the experience is lower as well.

The notion of the ‘football capsule’ is a new category on the palette of building types. The ‘football capsule’ is a venue created for football events with lower spectators’ capacity, but due to its original design it meets the functional, geometrical and acoustical requirements of big, modern stadiums therefore it is able to provide the desired, real arena atmosphere.

SIMPLE FUCTIONALITY

The Uj Higdegkuti Nandor Stadium named after the famous football player of the Golden Team is located on the site of the former MTK Stadium in the industrial suburb of Budapest. The former athletic stadium had been demolished because of its bad conditions and obsolete functional relations. The new pitch was built on the space of the former athletic track so we preserved its position under the street level. However, we turned it into the north-south axes in order to meet the requirements of modern football stadiums. The stadium had to be designed for 5000-seat capacity by which it became clear that the Uj Hidegkuti Nandor Stadium is a mini arena. Regarding this low capacity and the restricted opportunities of the narrow site, the stands were set opposite to each other along the west and east sides of the pitch.

The building is drawn back from Hungaria Boulevard so an elegant public square welcomes the guests in front of the main spectators’ entrance. The fans are able to move from the street straight to the east stand so there is a clear and spacious way for them. Buffets, a fan restaurant and other facilities are also located on this entrance level providing the highest level of services for the guests. ‘Street boxes’ are set separately on the first level because they function as exclusive business rooms of the MTK fan restaurant.

The main volume of the stadium is joined to the west stand. VIP, media areas, players’ zone and the new headquarter of MTK, one of the most popular Hungarian sport clubs were set in this four-story building part. The parking area is situated in front of the stadium fitting in the form of the former athletic track. The welcome zones of players, VIP and media guests open from this level. The VIP lounge is situated on the first level, from which VIP guests can reach their separated seats on the stand. The sky boxes are placed on the two upper levels.

Bars, restaurants and other retail areas are set on the south part of the stadium and they can serve the demand of people in the city during the whole year. The entrance of the rival supporters is located separately on the north side of the stadium. Their welcome zone, seats and related services are organised in this protected area.

CONCEPTUAL SPACE DESIGN

Designing a stadium for lower capacity generated innovative architectural solutions. The external appearance of the building is divided into two different parts by a characteristic, slanting, concrete plate. The volume for public use is set under the plate, while the roof of the stadium is situated over it. The roof with the membrane sheeting tensioned to the steel skeleton provides a dynamic form to the building. Its energetic lines evoke the body of a car. This effect is also emphasized by the ribbon-like section over the main public entrance. The volume under the slanting plate with its sharp, folded edges reminds us to an origami that blends well with the industrial environment of the stadium. This concept also appears in the design of the inner surfaces around the pitch.  In this way the stadium bowl is created by the union of the two stands opposite each other and the consciously formed masses along the north and south sides of the football pitch. This acoustically rated, closed seating bowl is able to guarantee the same experience that is generally expected from stadiums designed for ten thousand of guests.

The unique character of the new Uj Hidegkuti Nandor Stadium is created by its conscious architectural concept that meets the requirements of a complex program and is tailored to the site. ‘Football capsule’, our new notion is intended to call the attention to the importance of applying unique architectural solutions instead of boring routine ones in the case of small-sized stadiums as well.
