Tainan is the birthplace of Taiwan and the oldest city on the island. It is known as the country’s cradle of culture and heritage. It attracts many Taiwanese, but also foreign tourists visit the city for a short holiday. On top of its rich history, modern Tainan is developing as a central city in the knowledge-based economy, bringing in guest scientists for long-stay business trips. The new Hotel The Place in Tainan is part of a new mixed-use complex which consists of a shopping mall, cinema and offices. The 223 room hotel aims to attract young people, families as well as businessmen. The interior concept is based on the idea of getting guests in touch with the old city of Tainan, while staying in a modern and comfortable place. Historic references are added in a well-designed and sophisticated way, and contrast beautifully with the hotel’s sleek and contemporary environment.

The public areas have a strong themed identity, visually connecting the hotel and the old city street. The ground floor interior plays an important role in conveying the hotel’s identity to the public and functions as a brand icon. The entrance lobby is like a covered square, paved like the street. It houses an iconic structure in the middle, clearly visible from the outside. This bridged structure is directly connected to the back of house and contains all the required functions like a reception area, luggage storage and offices. In the main hall people walk in and out to get a coffee, browse local design goods from the shop or just sit down and watch the people passing by. The hotel’s sky lobby is situated on the sixth floor and includes a multi-use restaurant, and meeting rooms. The sky lobby employs a flexible layout plan which can be altered and rearranged during the day, functioning as a breakfast restaurant in the morning and a lounge bar by night. At the side of the lobby, three little houses separated by small alleys, contain the reception and private meeting spaces. Skylights in the roof fill the lobby with natural light in front of the houses, making the space feel bright during the day. The sculptural central bar is large but light and open enough not to block any views.

Rooms are compact, but space efficient and luxurious. There are various types of rooms, but all are based on the idea of creating a living area that is separated from the sleeping area. This turns the guest rooms into a home like space. All functional elements are put in one block. It is like a cabinet of curiosities that can be opened from all sides and functions as a storage space to hide all personal belongings so you don’t have to live from your suitcase. There is a superb shower, like you would love to have at home, and it includes various amenities, a minibar and multimedia facilities. The rooms have a timeless finish: dark wooden walls and a clean light floor. Details and free-standing furniture are distinctive. Design objects and materials with strong reminiscence to culture and history like reclaimed wood create an extra layer of surprise and are unique per room, which suits the hotel’s status of a design hotel.
