Article source: UNK The Zemelny Office Building is located close to the Moscow metro station called Ulitsa 1905 Goda. The building is surrounded with the industrial architecture dating back to the last century, while three kilometres away there is the Moscow City business district, and the Zemelny has become a ‘green’ alternative to it. The tower with a total area of 39000 m2 stands on a 3-floor stylobate and is “enwrapped” with a fishnet diagonal-lattice metal shell. The prototype of this structure is based on the hyperboloid creations by the engineer Shukhov, the author of the Shukhov Radio Tower in Moscow.
The new office building will become an ideal place for those valuing not only the functionality of a working space but also its harmony with the surrounding nature. The UNK bureau architects wanted the building to remind of a private house within the city line. Its architecture features a lot of glass shaped by a snow white metal outline. The balconies have Virginia creeper vines planted, which will be changing the image of the tower depending on the season: its leaves are bright green in summer, turning red in autumn and falling off in winter. The external mesh shaped envelope has an uneven rhythm thus creating the effect of an ‘artificial perspective’. It visually elongates the building making it look more elegant. The main volume of the building has the shape of an isosceles triangle, with the lift halls and fire escape stairs located in its central part. Each floor is split into six independent blocks. The fenced territory enjoys a developed recreation area. The underground level accommodates a parking with 370 parking lots and is equipped with charging units for electric cars. The original composition of the triangle plan helps to achieve a very high building area usage factor. A challenging task during the construction was to erect a building all along the construction site allocated for the office building. To solve it the project designers offered the method of top-down underground construction following which underground levels grow not from down-top but the other way round, from the surface down. The office building is located on the three-level stylobate which accommodates inside it the infrastructure, halls for holding various events, a café and shops – all those can be used both by the offices’ tenants as well as by local residents. Thanks to its vertical planting the building returns another green area to the city dwellers, while with the office building infrastructure being available to all it, becomes a new point of attraction in the district. At nights the Zemelny is decorated with lighting: the light is pouring along hyperploid structures featuring the lacy external envelope. During the time the Virginia creeper vines planted in tubs behind the transparent enclosing structures on the façade will enlarge and become an additional source of the oxygen for the city. The unique architecture of the building gives a new round of development for this industrial area, and additional objects of urban infrastructure for the residents. Contact UNK
