Set in the Mayacamas Mountains between Sonoma and Napa, the site for this weekend home is just 10 minutes from downtown Calistoga, but it seems much further removed. The owners envisioned a retreat where they could build lasting memories with their children, entertain friends and enjoy the wine country’s slower pace. Our intent for the project was to capitalize upon the unique nature of the site and views, while respecting the character of the land. Within this sensitive terrain, sustainability and fire resistance were key drivers for the design.
Fulldraw Vineyard is located within the Templeton Gap AVA, the heart of California’s Central Coast wine country. Set on 100 acres of established vineyards, the land is characterized by its rich limestone soils and cool maritime climate the perfect setting for growing Rhone-style varietals. Tucked into the rolling terrain, the winery is accessed via a long, looping drive that takes visitors through the vineyards before arriving at their destination. The proprietors, Connor and Rebecca McMahon, tasked Clayton Korte with designing a winery that represents their personality and passion for winemaking. The solution is a winery that is familiar yet exclusive, comfortable yet sophisticated seemingly disparate ideas that come together through a visitor experience that is as curated as it is intimate.
Jackson Hole Airport’s existing back-of-house rental car operations facilities were poorly organized, outdated, and no longer met contemporary sustainability standards. To better handle these functions at the nation’s only airport situated within a National Park, a new Quick Turn-Around (QTA) Facility was developed. The QTA is located on the south edge of the airport; its orientation derived from the existing east access road and the west row of buildings and hangars. Overall site planning and space program information was provided by the Jackson Hole Airport based on existing constraints, increasing demand, as well as future phasing and growth of airport development. The new facility provides a simple, site sensitive yet bold solution. At peak operation, each rental company can run approximately 200 cars through the facility per day.
The new 18,000-square-foot Ledding Library occupies a unique position at the edge of downtown Milwaukie, Oregon, between a wetland natural area, a city park, and City Hall. The design aims to create a civic presence for the library, reflecting its esteemed position in Milwaukie’s history, community, and downtown core, while taking advantage of the unique natural setting. Its form draws inspiration from the natural movement of rivers, bending across the site to capture sweeping views to the neighboring heritage Oak trees and water way. Extensive use of wood on both the exterior and interior help to blend the library with its surroundings, creating a warm, welcoming, vibrant atmosphere. The vision for the new library was driven by four main principles developed with library staff, community members, and city council.

This new facility reflects the college’s commitment to the future of the region and its mission to inspire and engage the entire community.
Italian design is synonymous with quality and… sustainability. It is demonstrated by the residential project of Sovereign House located in an exclusive Houston neighborhood on a plot of 7000 square meters, that has been designed by the green architect and designer Nicola De Pellegrini of Italian Studio Anidride Design located in Venice. The structure, on three floors, is generated by the intersection of simple and pure volumes that generate an articulated architecture with a contemporary design and a unique character.
Named for its butterfly-inspired angular canopies that adorn the project’s exterior, Folded Wings is a speculative office campus designed by Form4 Architecture in the technology epicenter of Palo Alto, CA. The first consequential design decision was to angle the typical office bar at mid-point of Building 1’s footprint. This angle helps outline a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly urban plaza between the complex’s two structures. The design’s lyrical intent is emphasized by a butterfly-form canopy that signals access to two levels of below-grade parking. Folded Wings’ overall appearance yields a form of humane modernism at the scale of the pedestrian. The design is counter to the typical notion of the Silicon Valley fortress campus where no one is allowed behind the gates. This site is open to the public as well as to the rest of the business park. Adjacent to walking and bike trails, the courtyard and park invite the local community to share the beauty.
The new office space for Jones-Dilworth, Inc. (JDI), an Austin-based boutique consultancy that brings emerging technologies to market, exists within the shell of a metal shed building located at Springdale General. The clients, who are skilled and sensitive designers in several contexts, charged our design team to create a new space for their existing and future team within the 9,150 square-foot space in Austin’s east side – meant to feel much more like a home than an office, with spaces crafted to accommodate specific and flexible daily activities.
Loyola Academic Housing sits at the intersection of N. Broadway and W. Sheridan Road adjacent to the Loyola University Lake Shore Campus in Chicago. The 105,000 gsf, 7-story mixed-use project comprises a retail base, student lounge and common areas on the second level that access an outdoor terrace for student use, and 5 levels of student housing above.
Located at the southern entry to the University and adjacent to a small park, the building becomes a gateway to the campus, while its corner site and commercial ground floor lends it civic presence for the community.
A young couple, in anticipation of starting a family, desired a new home that reflects their cultural backgrounds. He is Spanish, and was drawn to black and white minimalism. She is Mexican, and wanted splashes of color in a modern home. Their existing house in the Maryland suburbs was small and dark, and did not take advantage of the views to the green parkway running behind.
