FONDS REGIONAL D’ART CONTEMPORAIN in Marseille, France by Kengo Kuma & Associates

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Article source: Kengo Kuma & Associates

The project of the contemporary art center (FRAC) for the region Provence Alpes Cotes d’Azur (PACA) is the 3D version of the “museum without walls” invented by André Malraux, famous Frenchwriter and politician. It is a museum without a museum, a living and moving place, where the art pieces are in a constant movement and join the logic of diffusion and interaction with the visitors.

Branch of the National Center for Contemporary Art in Ekaterinburg, Russia by ARCHSTRUKTURA

Reminiscence of beautiful utopian idea of the museum in the bridge.
This design followed strict requirements to the construction of contemporary art centers which ban damaging or irreversibly altering a historical monument, and order to safeguard and restore it as best as possible. So we designed a number of minimum additions providing both for all modern functions at the same time being stylistically neutral and meeting the safeguarding policy.

Origin Part IV – foster in Nantan, Kyoto by BCXSY

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Article source: Boaz Cohen & Sayaka Yamamoto ( BCXSY )

Foster is comprised of three series of crafted objects and is the result of our collaboration with Ibuki, a non-profit organization based in Sonobe, Nantan-city, Kyoto prefecture. Ibuki is a group of young master craftsmen from varying disciplines with the common goal of preserving Japan’s traditional crafts through education and practice. During our time in Sonobe we worked with two wood craftsmen, Kenta Kuzuhara and Kozo Sumitani, and one ceramicist, Hiroshi Nagai. Our desire in this collaboration was to develop design concepts that would challenge the skill set of each craftsman, while remaining pure in the aesthetic value and practical in use.

LaM – Lille Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Outsider Art in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Article source: Manuelle Gautrand Architecture

The project concerns the refurbishment and the extension of the Lille Modern Art Museum in a magnificent park at Villeneuve d’Ascq. The existing building, designed by Roland Simounet in 1983, is already on the Historic monuments list. The project aims at building up the museum as a continuous and fluid entity, this by adding new galleries dedicated to a collection of Art Brut works, from a travelling movement that extrapolates existing spaces. A complete refurbishment of the existing building was next required, some parts were very worn.
