Article source: Edoardo Tresoldi

Studio Studio Studio, the new interdisciplinary lab founded by Edoardo Tresoldi, presents Gharfa: an experiential pavilion installation within the temporary creative project “Diriyah Oasis”, designed and curated by Dubai-based studio Designlab Experience, and located in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.
This project, commissioned by the Diriyah Season Committee, is situated in close proximity to the At-Turaif District; a UNESCO World Heritage Site about to undergo a major developmental upgrade that includes the opening of a plethora of museums and cultural institutions. Furthermore, this entire initiative is taking place in a period of major changes for the country, which has only just opened its doors to international tourists for the first time last September.

Barjeel Museum For Modern Arab Art, Rifat Chadirji Prize 2019 Winner in Sharjah, UAE by AIDIA STUDIO

Monday, November 18th, 2019

Article source: AIDIA STUDIO

The museum sits in a semi-industrial area on the periphery of Sharjah, its immediate context is a gas station, a highway and a low-density residential district.

We have filled the site with a low-rise monolithic structure covering the entire footprint of the plot. We envisage an introverted complex of solid appearance resembling a fortress. The museum is not designed as an architectural object, the site and the surroundings would not justify such an approach, we have instead proposed a porous mass which we have meticulously carved to create courtyards, alleys and passages, intertwined with the galleries and rest of the programme. An immersive experience for the visitor to subtract himself from reality.

Cultural center and Library ‘De Factorij’ in Zaventem, Belgium by ebtca architecten

Sunday, November 3rd, 2019

Article source: ebtca architecten

Site

The former Suchard factory site in Zaventem was transformed into the “The Factory” cultural site which is intended to lend the town centre a whole new look. The Suchard site is a long stretch of terrain; a ‘lost’ piece of land situated between the backs of the stores on Stationstraat and the houses on Seliersstraat and the railway on the other side. This site was also subject to a strict “BPA” (special development plan). The development of this site was a surefire socio-cultural injection for the town centre. The bordering presence of the academy with its green surroundings and gorgeous trees broadened and enhanced this site and will make it the green anchoring point leading to the town. The entire project developed into one masterplan: ‘culture site Suchard’.

Programme

In addition to a library, The Factory also features a large theatre with 679 seats and a multifunctional hall. The main building has a large foyer, a cultural cafe, a dance and ballet hall and rehearsal spaces for music and recitals, party halls, catering, exhibition rooms, conference and meeting rooms and artists’ residences on top of the administrative areas. The playhouse itself is equipped with a full-fledged theatre, theatre storage spaces and studios as well as a mobile orchestra pit (with elevator) for an orchestra of approx. 30 musicians.

The Cultural Block in Paris, France by TOLILA+GILLILAND & TVK

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

Article source: TOLILA+GILLILAND & TVK

Seven-theater cinema with cultural space, community center with concert space and dance studios, 342 residential units, a shared garden, bespoke artwork, and retail space Three residential buildings offering exceptional views of the great Parisian landscape anchor three corners of a mixed-use block. At the heart of the project is a cultural center for the new ZAC Clichy-Batignolles district in Paris’ 17th arrondissement: a seven-theatre cinema and a community center. These public volumes, anchored to the ground, give way to the public realm and are crowned with hanging gardens. Three residential blocks emerge from this base, climbing up to 50 meters. This simple distribution of masses effectively resolves the inscription of a complex program on a high-density site. Thickened facades permit a band of generous loggias around the residential blocks. Architectural precast concrete on the buildings’ facades situate the project within the material tradition of Parisian stone and concrete and gives each of the three buildings a singular expression from the ground to the sky: the twisted form with its torqued effect (sand colored), the chiseled bar with continuous balconies (in white) and the pleated tower with its progressive fold (in white).

SGI New England Cultural Center in Brookline, Massachusetts by Touloukian Touloukian Inc.

Sunday, October 6th, 2019

Article source: Touloukian Touloukian Inc.

An existing art institute in Brookline, MA, this building was proposed to be the new Boston cultural center for the religious institution of Soka Gakkai International. The proposal included the assessment and renovation of an existing facility which houses office space, conference rooms, meditation rooms, and an outdoor landscaping element. Located along a highly trafficked street, the intervention of a wood wall and screening system transformed the existing facade into an interactive and dynamic street-front landmark. A pallet of light tones, painted brick, and articulated greenery create an accepting atmosphere that reflects the ideals and identity of SGI. The motif of wood and light carries through the entry and into a re-invented atrium space where an articulation of skylights work into a double height space highlighting a connection to the main worship space and additional program beyond.

Guardian Art Center in Beijing, China by Büro Ole Scheeren

Cultural Center

An auction house is a hybrid between museum, gallery, market – culture and trading. An auction house links past, present, and future. Ultimately, an auction house celebrates and passes on awareness of history and traditions; it provides a stage for cultural values: respect and responsibility, valuation and prediction, beauty and meaning. An auction house attracts and gathers people and auctions are social events for the appreciation of art and culture. The building acts as a social catalyst for cultural exchange and imagines a home for the arts in a broader sense – a home for its makers (the artists) and its keepers (the collectors).

Palace of Culture in Zheleznovodsk, Russia by ARCHIPROBA STUDIOS

Thursday, September 19th, 2019

Article source: ARCHIPROBA STUDIOS

The Palace of Culture was built in 1982, the standard project was developed by the Design Institute commissioned by the Tourism Council. The Palace of Culture is a striking example of the Brezhnev era architecture: the area of the building is about 12 thousand meters and since construction, it has never been renovated. The reconstruction lasted six months and amounted to approximately 300 million rubles.

The rectangular shape of the building is made in the style of modernist architecture: it houses a cinema and concert and lecture halls, dance halls, recreation areas, educational spaces, exhibition spaces, a chess club and a library.

To the west of the city center, at the bay of Shenzhen, a new business district known as Super Bay City is being developed. The urban zoning plan for the area between the bay and the Beizhoushan Wetland Park specifies a high-density urban quarter. In future, a broad north-south axis referred to as Central Park will link the oceanfront park with the wetlands to the north and include landscaping, plazas, and cultural facilities. In the block structure of the masterplan, the China Telling Communications Building occupies the north-east corner plot at the interface between Central Park and the wetland park.
