Monday, December 10th, 2012

Article source: Diederendirrix Architects

Transformation Boiler House Ceres into an office- and educational building. Boiler House Ceres belongs to the first generation of buildings on the university campus in Eindhoven and is one of the most valuable volumes on the campus. Technological evolution made the original function of the boiler house redundant, however, by reallocating the boiler house to be the accommodation for the ICMS research institute, the TU/e can ensure it is preserved.

The Gaillard Hall in Dahlonega, Georgia by Lord, Aeck & Sargent

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

Article source: Lord, Aeck & Sargent

Back in the early 1950s, when noted Atlanta architect Richard L. Aeck stood with his 4-year-old son Tony on a reviewing stand overlooking North Georgia College’s revered drill field at the center of campus, he could not have known that the military barracks he was designing for a site opposite the stand would some 60 years later be restored and rehabilitated by the descendant architecture firm to his own Aeck Associates.

Gaillard Hall at North Georgia College & State University is a good example of international style architecture and was saved from demolition due to its historic significance as the campus’ best example of mid-20th century architecture and its unique proximity and relationship to the historic drill field. © 2012 Jonathan Hillyer

The building is embedded in a unique setting in the center of the town – surrounded by freestanding family houses, intimate gardens and an old church. In order to tie in to the existing context, the relatively large object was divided into several smaller ones, with the largest part – the gym hidden at the back.

Binh Duong School in Vietnam by Vo Trong Nghia Architects

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

Article source: Vo Trong Nghia Architects

Binh Duong, a new city which is 30 minutes away from Ho Chi Minh City, has a typical tropical climate all year round. The site is located in the middle of a flourishing forest with a wide variety of green and fruits, running rampant. This is where folks spending their time under the shade of trees. To pursuit a beautiful life, people are in harmony with the nature, making the border between the inside and the outside ambiguously. From the very first impression of the site, we tried to embed the building into the site by delivering this Vietnam-oriented generous spirit of natural land into the school design, which will eventually have 800 students.
