Hotel Mono in Mosque Street, Singapore by Spacedge Designs

Monday, October 7th, 2019

Article source: Spacedge Designs

Project Overview

Hotel Mono is a striking new landmark in the historic Chinatown area in Singapore, the result of an extensive refurbishment of six conservation 19th century shophouses. Once a rundown budget hotel, the independent hotel now radiates with an assertive design language applied consistently from its façade to its interiors. The hotel’s design was conceptualised to appeal to young social-media-savvy travellers who place a high value on design in their choice of  accommodations, and this proposition is backed by affordable room prices. Faced with poor site conditions, as well as budget constraints, our design team used simple low-cost materials to create high design value. Examples include the old-school mosaic used in the bathrooms, which is also a nod to the history of the buildings; and the 38mm-thick black metal bar which serve as lighting point, clothes rack, and post-modern sculpture in all the rooms.

Paring the hotel’s façade down to black and white has made it a striking counterpoint to
the cacophony of colour in its neighbourhood. Image Courtesy © HOTEL MONO

Cloud Hotel Renovation Project in Huzhou, China by Studio8

Sunday, October 6th, 2019

Article source: Studio8

Nestled in the mountains of Moganshan, Cloud Hotel sits serenely in a bamboo forest in Deqing County, a popular retreat destination 200km away from Shanghai. The original building had three levels built along the mountain slope and carried features inspired by European castles. STUDIO8 was commissioned to renovate the architecture and interiors and redesign the visual identity.

In the renovation process, STUDIO8 aimed to best utilize the natural slope formed by the landscape, while taking full advantage of the spectacular mountain views. The designers were also faced with a challenge to create a dynamic integration of the spatial experience and the “Cloud” brand image, and to infuse it into all design decisions. “Architecture built in nature functions as the media in between humans and nature; it should blend into the landscape organically, instead of just being in it,” says the studio principal.

Apart-hotel Svatý Vavřinec in Pec pod Sněžkou, Czech Republic by ov architekti s.r.o.

Sunday, September 29th, 2019

Article source: ov architekti s.r.o.

The suite houses were built on the lot of a former store from the 80s. Four of the houses are located on the „meadow“ – a green roof above the shops in the parterre of the building. The space between the individual houses offers views of the far horizons of the mountain meadows. The atmosphere among these houses is intimate but neighbourly. The roof garden covers commercial spaces and garages.

The mountain town and ski resort Pec pod Sněžkou originated from the earlier original buildings in the valley, that expanded toward the surrounding hills. Slowly, large tourist accommodation and hotels emerged. The core character of the area is shaped by the individually standing buildings along the main street that are in close contact with the surrounding nature. The atmosphere is captured by a road rising through the valley along-side streams and by the openings between houses that allow a view of the further planes of the village and the cabins scattered on the meadows. The design of four apartment buildings continues the thread of these qualities and develops and further elaborates on them.

Perianth Hotel in Athens, Greece by K-studio

Friday, September 27th, 2019

Article source: K-studio

The design of the 38 rooms is directly inspired by the history and character of the original Art Deco building, and by the contemporary life of the ancient city in which it is located.

The main challenge of the project lay in the re-working of the layout of the building. Originally built to house retail space, offices and apartments in an era that gave little thought to the future legacy of buildings, the structure was arranged to suit the use intended at the time. The resulting irregularity of the building’s structure required an innovative approach to re-organising the layout so that it’s new use would work within it. More recently the building interior has been stripped back leaving only the façade and structural elements to provide the clues to its history and to direct our design decision making.

Hotel in Coimbra, Portugal by depA Architects

Friday, September 20th, 2019

Article source: depA Architects

The three pre-existing buildings around a mediterranean courtyard are located Coimbra, in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Protection Zone.

In such delicate surroundings, the intervention seeks  a sensible design balanced between the need for technical adaptations to contemporary building demands, the legal requirements for a contemporary hotel and the huge care that an intervention of this type requires. In other words, the adaption to the new program and the consequent deep intervention by all means paid deep respect for the historical relevance of the buildings and its great architectural and constructive values.

Hothel – Boutique Hotel in Poland by KLUJ ARCHITEKCI

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019

Article source: KLUJ ARCHITEKCI

Hel is a city located in Poland, on the Hel Peninsula by the Baltic Sea. There is a seaside resort, a fishing and a yacht harbor. In this small, but very charming city, considered as ‘the beginning of Poland’, the boutique hotel called ‘hotHel’ was created.

The facility is located next to the main road running along the Hel Peninsula about 1 km from the bay and 2 km from the sea coastilne. The plot on which the building stands is a sandy dune with several trees characteristic of this region. The building is located along a street with several identical buildings. The sizes and shapes of buildings are defined in the local spatial development plan. This plan defines the lines in which new objects should be placed, building heights, roof inclination directions and angles as well as materials and colors to be used on elevations and roofs. It is these regulations that arrange the buldings of Hel along the Dworcowa street. However ‘hotHel’ stands out among other facilities. Its roof and side elevations are covered with graphite tiles, and each of the apartments has a characteristic white loggia.
