Defensie eiland in Woerden, Netherlands by Groosman

Wednesday, June 15th, 2016

Article source: Groosman

Stripped of its original defensive function, a unique living environment has been created on the characteristic Schiereiland. Groosman has designed the new buildings to reference the old industrial structures, so that the character of the imposing island is maintained, impressions of the past are re-experienced and a unique living environment, in which a Woerdenaar can identify with, is created.

114 Public Housing Units in Barcelona, Spain by Sauquet Arquitectes, Slp

Tuesday, May 24th, 2016

Article source: Sauquet Arquitectes, Slp

The first thing we did was to think about the people, about the future inhabitants. The building had to have more than one hundred rental houses with one or two bedrooms for the elderly.

We thought about how the elderly would contribute to the building’s characteristics. The key was to imagine how they would live in it. We could see them taking care of plants in ceramic pots, and how all these plants  would hang down from the windows and railings like a green cascade. We could also see them sitting in the  sun, enjoying the views and gathering together for a chat, talking to each other across the balconies… This  is how we got the idea of having large south-facing terraces looking out onto the landscape. Moreover,  having the terraces staggered –in a cascade, – would allow us to give a terrace to the highest number of  homes.

Golden Cube in Billancourt, France by Hamonic+Masson & Associés architectes

Sunday, May 15th, 2016

Article source: Hamonic+Masson & Associés architectes

The guiding principles of these student halls of residence were standardisation, self-regulation and a maximisation of internal space. This project, with its 156 rooms in an 8-storey building taking up almost the entire plot, is no exception to this rule. There is nonetheless a secret garden, as the project coordinators, Loci Anima, were keen to reintroduce some biodiversity onto the island.

“Les Hauts Plateaux” innovative housing project in Gironde, France by Christophe Hutin Architecture

Wednesday, May 4th, 2016

Article source: Christophe Hutin Architecture

The exceptional and particularly innovative conditions of living given by the « Hauts plateaux » project, phases 1&2, makes it « primum inter pares » and give a clear and new proposal for the housing issue. This project means to create new conditions of living, in which one can find on one hand the desire to live in collective and comfortable housing and on the second hand the necessity of intimacy. It gives the qualities and the liberties of an individual house in collective structure, inside an urban agglomeration. This project carries the idea of the evolution of life of the people, it aims to offer pleasure of living. In this sense, it is sustainable.

Västra Kajen Housing in Jönköping, Sweden by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

Article source: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Located on the quayside of the Munksjön lake, these two urban housing blocks are based on a long term strategy of sustainability, creating attractive housing on one of the best sites in central Jönköping. Rather than a row of standard housing slabs, the requested number of apartments was assembled into two large units. The two compact volumes establish a solid position proportionally acceptable both to the city as well as the lake. It also minimizes the building envelope in line with the low energy concept.

Sunday, March 27th, 2016

Article source: Desarrolladora del Parque, A.flo Arquitectos, Serrano Monjaraz Arquitectos

The main goal of this project, located in Mexico City, was to maximize the marketable square meters. With this on sight Aflo Arquitectos made sure that all spaces had the correct balance between functionality, usability, comfort and aesthetics, in addition to considering the proper and efficient development of the project for which its delivery will be held on a timely manner. Another determining factor was the complicated topography that added a degree of complexity to the program that was resolved with ease and efficiency right to the daily operation of the property.
