Serpentine Pavilion 2017 in London, England by Kéré Architecture

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

Article source: Kéré Architecture

Taking inspiration from the great tree in his home town of Gando, Burkina Faso, where members of the community often meet to reflect about the day, Francis Kéré’s 2017 Serpentine Pavilion design was based on creating this sense of community while connecting people with nature.

A great over-hanging roof canopy made of steel and a transparent skin covers the entire footprint of the Pavilion, allowing sunlight to enter the space while also protecting it from the rain. Wooden shading elements line the underside of the roof, creating a dynamic shadow effect that changes with the movement of the sun and clouds.

Asian Pavilion at The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos

Monday, November 26th, 2018

Article source: Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos

The Asian Art housed in the Rijksmuseum forms an autonomous collection with splendid pieces, works of art that neither can easily be located within the chronological tour of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum, nor do they relate well to the architecture of the nineteenth century building. The goal was to design a separate building for the collection, the Asian Pavilion.

La Grange Pavilion in Texas by MURRAY LEGGE ARCHITECTURE

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

Article source: MURRAY LEGGE ARCHITECTURE

La Grange Pavilion was created as part of a landscape intervention for a house perched on a bluff overlooking the forest and farmland of Colorado River basin seventy miles east of Austin. Surrounding views offer a quintessential display of central Texas wildlife and landscape: songbirds chirping in gnarled oaks on the bluff, hawks and buzzards spiraling on warm updrafts, morning mists in the valley below dissolving in the heat of the day, and ending with the long shadows of a low sun or the dramatic colors of an overcast sunset. The homeowners envisioned an outdoor patio area that would enable them to enjoy this incredible landscape throughout the year.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018

Article source: Reed Watts Ltd

Reed Watts Architects have recently completed their third and largest project at the V&A, a new café and pergola structure in the John Madejski Garden. Going from conception to completion in less than four months, the elegant steel structure defines a new space for seating in the museum and provides a dual-fronted café counter for Benugo, the museum’s café operator.

The V&A in South Kensington hosts over 4m visitors every year and its main café enjoys an outstanding reputation as one of the most beautiful in London. The brief for Reed Watts was to deliver a café in the Madejski Garden that would be met with a similar reception, replacing an existing structure that was no longer fit for purpose.

The Hangar at Kenmore Town Square in Washington by GRAHAM BABA ARCHITECTS

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Article source: GRAHAM BABA ARCHITECTS

The 4,600-square-foot Hangar and 24,000-square-foot Town Square provide a year-round focal point and a symbolic living room for the city. Located in the heart of downtown, the complex touches upon the primal notions of gathering, creating a venue for passive and active recreation while ensuring a home for nature in the rapidly growing community. The Hangar, conceived as a pavilion, is designed to morph depending upon weather or functional requirements. Simple and large, the space opens to the Town Square via a 24-foot-wide by 16-foot-tall bi-fold window wall. When open, the large roof overhang provides protection from rain and sun, and enables parents easy access to their kids playing in the adjacent 14,000-square-foot plaza. The plaza features a fountain and heated rocks to encourage people to linger in inclement weather. The inverted roof lifts up from the building to gesture toward the park and adjacent thoroughfare, with the residual gap between building and roof becoming a dramatic clerestory. At night, the extensive glazing transforms the shelter into a lantern.

The Atlantic Pavilion in Viana do Castelo, Portugal by VALDEMAR COUTINHO ARQUITECTOS

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Article source: VALDEMAR COUTINHO ARQUITECTOS

The building is situated next to “Avenida do Atlântico” in Viana do Castelo. An avenue facing the sea, in which a series of buildings are constructed, which, on a first impression, the urban front, in which the building is inserted, transmits a rather insipid image due to the nature of the programs and options taken in its projects. A characteristic which has become an asset in the conceptualization of the project of the Atlantic Pavilion.

Besides the necessity of the City Council of Viana do Castelo having a sports pavilion, it gives support to the EB 2,3 Pedro Barbosa School and for complementarity use by the community to develop various modalities, it is mainly adjacent in the county’s objectives, to expand the population’s possibility of practising sports activities in covered facilities.

Avila Pavilion in Jalisco, Mexico by COTAPAREDES Arquitectos

Monday, October 15th, 2018

Article source: COTAPAREDES Arquitectos

The project is located in the garden of a rest house on the outskirts of the city of Guadalajara Jalisco.

The building had to function to host events of different purposes, with a capacity for 200 people.

By counting the site with a house and a terrace of traditional architecture, the Pavilion should seek to be as respectful of the environment as possible and at the same time be efficient with the resources to facilitate its execution, for which the structure was modulated using the Standard measurements of the materials to be used such as steel, aluminum, glass and sheet cover.

Floating Pavilion Meerstad in The Netherlands by LYVR architecten

Friday, October 12th, 2018

Article source: LYVR architecten

Assignment
In november 2014 the Municipality of Groningen commissioned LYVR for the design of a new accommodation for Bureau Meerstad / GEMM.

New residential area Meerstad

Bureau Meerstad is an organization that is responsible for the implementation of the plans for the new residential area “Meerstad”. This area is positioned around, and partially on, a newly-made lake. The development for Meerstad started a few years ago, the initial plan was to build 10.000 dwellings in this area. The plan will be achieved in approximately 25 years. The total planning area is gradually established, so the different residential areas can ‘operate’ on it’s own. “Meeroevers” is the first residential area that is being realized.
