ELECTRIC CASTLE (visual elements for music festival) in Romania, Balkans by ATELIER MASS

Sunday, November 5th, 2017

Article source: ATELIER MASS

Until so far, with its 4 editions, from 2013 to this year’s edition, Electric Castle music festival in Bonțida, Romania set itself apart from the usual staging of a music festival. Combining striking visual elements, mass entertainment, and a Gothic setting – the ruin of a 15th century Banffy Castle – the event turned more into a complex sensorial and spatial experience, a celebration of contemporary art in its different forms: from music to architecture, design, and installation.

The project with a surface area of around 70 square meters is a guest pavilion that functions as an autonomous architecture conceived as an extension of a project that we had developed in the studio. The human scale of the pavilion makes it a comfortable space where to experience living in a garden.

The Exchange in Columbus, Ohio by Oyler Wu Collaborative

Friday, October 20th, 2017

Article source: Oyler Wu Collaborative

The Exchange sits within the plaza adjacent to the Irwin Conference Center by Eero Saarinen (formerly the Irwin Union Bank) and makes use of the three existing canopies that formerly served the drive-through bank tellers. The design challenge was to “activate” the space while relating a contemporary design concept to the historic building and existing site conditions. Oyler Wu’s research into Eero Saarinen’s oeuvre, along with analysis of the site, led to a focus on three keys concepts: the unification of the existing canopies into a rectangular volume, solid/void relationships that include a \”loose fit\” placement of solid elements within carved voids throughout the scheme, and the use of contrasting tectonic strategies of solid and frame. The intention of this strategy is to produce the sense that the pavilion is simultaneously brand new and that it has always been there.
