Extension and Renovation Works at the Social Center Mirasol in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Spain by ONL Arquitectura

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Article source: ONL Arquitectura

The existing Social Center expands with a third new volume located at the south area of the building complex. This new wing redefines two patios of distinct character: the first courtyard is an enclosure and has a cloister character, and the second one is more opened and dynamic.

VALLECAS 47 in Madrid, Spain by Estudio UNTERCIO

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Article source: Estudio UNTERCIO

We tried to imagine, all of us together, a dwelling in which we would like to live. Bright and open to meet with friends some of us said, intimate and in semidarkness, the laziest ones replied. A dwelling with a multiple personality. One that would be able to react to the changing seasons. One that would open itself to two different environments; on one side, a street belonging to a new urban development, but close to the urban life of Vallecas Village, and on the other side, a bounded and safe courtyard.

Domus Vitae in Ferrara, Italy by Tomas Ghisellini Architects

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Article source: Tomas Ghisellini Architects

A large green area, included between scenes and architectural settings, regenerates the fascination of the wonderful Delizie (marvelous country houses with huge gardens) of the Este Family, reinterpreting one of the urban issues perhaps more intimately rooted into the mental image that people keep of their city.

Social workplace Combiwerk in Delft by i29 Interior Architects and VMX Architects

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Article source: i29 Interior Architects

Combiwerk Delft is a Social Workplace (SW) company and offers custom work to people who, due to a physical, psychological or mental limitation, are not able to find a regular job. Besides these limitations, the possibilities and talents are especially looked at. A lot has changed and the emphasis lately has been shifted more to re-integration into the regular work force. The job centre (career square) has become much more important with respect to workplaces. Training is offered and tests are done in the kitchen of the company restaurant, the cleaning service and the office. Assembling, sorting and packing are done at the workplaces. Green and environmental services are also an important branch of the social workplace. The ambitious attitude of the company is striking. There is a strong, positive culture. The new construction was intended to clearly reflect this. Despite the limited resources and a clear wish for a sober approach, the building and decoration had to radiate quality. It had to convey attention and involvement, in order to stimulate a sense of pride in its users. An environment that supports that valuable work is being done here, with special people.

Bodega in New York City by Art Meadow

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Article source: Matthew Hoffman

Historically, bodegas have served as social gathering centers for neighborhoods, going far beyond super markets and grocery stores by offering informal services like jobs connections and advice on finding apartments. Unfortunately, New York City’s bodegas have been closing by the hundreds over the past few years, not being able to compete with big chain stores like CVS and Duane Reade. Business Insider published a startling statistic that “in 2010 on a 33-block stretch of Broadway alone there were 137 store closures.”

Recreational Center in Yaroslavl, Russia by DK architects

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Article source: DK architects

The building is located on a boulevard in the historical center of Yaroslavl. Because of the absence of close architectural surrounding the building has been conceived as an integrated part of a pedestrian passage that could be transformed into an urban landscape. The whole building has been designed as an element of recreational urban area. It does not interrupt the movement alongside the boulevard but develops its scenario creating new directions: throughout itself, up and down and across it connecting existing pedestrian ways.

Social Services Center in Madrid, Spain by dosmasunoarquitectos

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Article source: dosmasunoarquitectos

The programme of the new local Social Services Center in Móstoles is strongly conditioned by two facts: on the one hand, it hosts many identical spaces –single, unipersonal offices- and it is placed within a new, aseptic urban fabric –currently being developed- which features no constraints but the street network and the plot orientation. On the other hand, the building’s relationship with its close and distant surroundings is based upon environmental respect, achieved –in this case- by means of traditional procedures, instead of throughout advanced technological systems.

The project starts from an image of a breakwater that represents the relationship between man and sea. The waterfront is the meeting point between the sea and the land. Hence, the man has stones, natural elements, which protect him from nature itself but are of diverse character.

Agora Sociocultural Center in A Coruña, Spain by Rojo/Fernandez-Shaw, Arquitectos

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Article source: Rojo/Fernandez-Shaw, Arquitectos

An Agora must be an accessible and open space for people’s meeting and their civic expression. This public and collective character makes architecture face to a double challenge:

On the one hand, its program is complex and multiple, covering from culture, administration, meeting, spectacle and social services.

On the other hand, even being a building, its true vocation is linked and close to the concept and qualities of a square.
