Thursday, August 26th, 2021

Article source: Zait Lev Architects

In the heart of the Arava region, at the foot of Mount Darga, is the Arava Aquatic Sport Center. The project offers a multi-pool sports facility and community center to the various desert communities of the Arava, and it replaces the single outdoor pools in each of the communities. The structure is used for swimming lessons and competitions, as well as various sports, leisure and recreational classes. It also serves as an open platform for community activities and public events. The project restores part of the historical role of the well: Water as a source of life and a place that allows opportunities for encounters and social activities.

New Sports Hall Extension in Ghent, Belgium by SADAR+VUGA

Friday, January 8th, 2021

Article source: SADAR+VUGA

The new sports hall becomes a northern gate to the campus. Its monolithic volume is on the northern side lifted up, opening its interior sports ground to a viewing from the surrounding. Namely, an englazed stripe under the cantilevered volume unveils activities indoor to a passer-by, drivers and visitors of the campus. A careful dimensioning of the stripe as well as its connecting to a campus pedestrian route triggers a curiosity of by-passers and attracts them to enter the building. Once inside, a ramp, an access to stands in the cantilevered level, becomes a deviation of the campus pedestrian route, creating a public promenade through the building.

Faculty Of Social Work Ghent Opens To Public in Belgium by SADAR+VUGA

Sunday, January 3rd, 2021

Article source: SADAR+VUGA

The new building for the Faculty of Social Work (Building T) acts as a southern gateway and the new Sports Hall Extension forms the northern gate to the campus.

Building T is a free-standing volume, set back off the Voskenslaan, creating an open space as a transition between residential homes along the street and the large green axis of the future masterplan development. Its monolithic massing communicates with its immediate surroundings with a permeable shading membrane, horizontal lamellas which evenly wrap the building’s englazed volume. The wrap opens up at the north-west side of the building in front of the plaza as a big entrance arch, unveiling the interior of the building on the ground floor. The big entrance arch acts as an inviting element that directs people from the plaza/lawn outside to the interior of the building.

Williams Park Field house in Chicago, Illinois by STL Architects

Tuesday, December 17th, 2019

Article source: STL Architects

The new fieldhouse located in the Bronzeville community adjacent to the Chicago Housing Authority Dearborn Homes will replace an existing fieldhouse and will support the Chicago Park District and Chicago Housing Authority’s expanding programming needs. The single-story building includes a 3,800 square foot basketball gymnasium with spectator seating, two multi-purpose community rooms with a shared pantry, offices, reception, and storage space. The entry lobby and corridor are generously sized and will include flexible seating to provide a space for spontaneous gathering and events. The fieldhouse is situated at the center of an eight-and-one-half acre park that includes a playground, baseball and soccer fields, an interactive water spray feature, and basketball courts. The fieldhouse will be the first building in Chicago to be clad in vibrant, stainless steel shingles that respond to different light conditions and appear to change hue when viewed from different angles. This bold and elegant exterior expression enhances the visibility of the fieldhouse and establishes the fieldhouse as a community anchor for the Park District. The materiality at the interior will be limited to select materials including concrete and wood with an expressive wood structural system at the ceiling, upholding the rich historical expression of wood that is found in many historic Park District fieldhouses in Chicago.

Primavera Farm in Minas Gerais, Brazil by Mutabile Archictecture

Tuesday, November 5th, 2019

Article source: Mutabile Archictecture

The Primavera Farm project is an intervention in a pre-existing property, which had undergone successive extensions without planning or supervision of architectural professionals. Thus, its architecture lacked cohesion, organization and aesthetic unity. The building had transitional spaces in privileged spots, while social spaces were relegated to the background. The project aimed to connect these spaces, taking advantage of the surrounding view and improving the quality of its architecture. The renovation also needed to take advantage of the original structure as much as possible, lowering costs and unnecessary interventions.
