When we received the brief for Kiwi Discovery’s new tourist and souvenir shop in the refurbished Auckland International Airport terminal it sounded like a fun project to showcase a wide variety of New Zealand products and memories to departing tourists. When we set about the design challenge however, it was trickier than we thought!
The wedge-shaped tenancy had to house a huge number of completely different products, which range from the very small, e.g. keyrings up to large sheepskin duvets. Many of these items come with mismatching proprietary stands and nearly all contain small writing which makes them very hard to identify at a distance.
There is also some apparel but most of this is Merino woollens of subdued colours aimed at the Asian market. There was also some food, including chilled items, and variety of Manuka honey products (most contained in very bright packaging with gold accents to indicate their expensive nature to Asian customers) and these are a big seller.
Studio MUTT were appointed by Universal Works in late 2017 to act as architect and creative partner for their future stores. The brief was to determine how an approach to clothing can translate into an approach to architecture. Studio MUTT developed a functional and vibrant style that responds to the layout out the building and could be tailored to subsequent sites. The requirements of the real estate program were observed throughout the design process and 3 large basements for parking were considered to meet the needed capacity. At the second basement there is a Power Center for commercial services and convenience stores.

A dull industrial building from the 1990s has been transformed into a modern monastery for the science of cycling. High performance bicycles from Argon 18 are displayed in a futuristic retail experience that blends elements from the world of technology, engineering, mechanics and community. Here harmony exists between man, nature and machine. It is a space that fosters knowledge, learning and innovation and perhaps even more importantly, invites people to dream.
ZAAS, was commissioned to design the new flagship store for Gree, one of world’s largest air conditioner companies, in Istanbul where the task was to create an engaging display space as well as promoting the recognition of this world wide brand in Turkey.
Under a very economic budget, the design is shaped around two areas: the front area is planned to include client reception and sales, meeting room and air conditioner display space while the back area is planned to host the employee offices, seminar room and storage. The air conditioner display area is designed to accomodate the wall – mounted types and the stand up cylindrical floor conditioners, which have their distinct technology and design.
The abstraction of the air that is ‘heated’ and ‘cooled’ come into being in the use of a bold, warm color in the meeting room and the different tones of blue in other areas. The use of different materials like wood, metal and glass also aim to reflect the idea of harmony betwen the cold and warm, embracing the theme of “Heating and Cooling for Everyone Everywhere”.
Most consumers do not notice the display stands onto which their favourite products are sold in stores. But behind the scenes, retail merchandising experts are examining your behaviour and actions in a bid to attract you to their products.
We spoke to Alex Doidge of US and Australia-based visual merchandising company EDA to discover what techniques brands employ when creating an in-store display.
“Many brands and retailers forget the basics and embark on bold designs, which actually may hinder sales.

Rest Area Niemenharju is located on European highway E75 which runs from Greece in the south to North Cape all the way in the North of Europe. After a long drive, it’s a perfect place to stop for the night and take in the natural environment. The Rest Area is located on a beautiful spot next to a large pond and a ridge (in Finnish harju, hence the name) bordering lake Kolima, which is a remnant from the ice age. The Rest Area takes its inspiration from the surrounding nature. It offers a break from driving, with beautiful, unobstructed views to the water.
