McGeever Building Rehabilitation Isla Vista in California by Acme Architecture

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Article source: Keith Rivera, AIA

This rehabilitation of a modest 1960’s commercial building brings new life to a neglected structure in this coastal college town adjacent to the University of California Santa Barbara. Facade improvements included new fiber cement cladding inspired by retail barcodes and energy efficient storefronts with irregularly patterned mullions. Along the sidewalk raised outdoor dining patios were created with metal enclosures that mimic the storefronts. Inside, mechanical systems were updated along with and access for the disabled. Now the open facades entice passerby while the outdoor dining activities and rhythmic patterns of the new facade enliven the downtown streetscape.

Yandex Saint-Petersburg office II in Saint Petersburg, Russia by Za bor architects

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Article source: Vadim Costyrin

It is indicative that this office is to some extent a return to the roots of cooperation of za bor architects and the largest Russian IT-corporation Yandex. The first office developed for Yandex by za bor architects is in the same building of the Benois business center in Saint Petersburg, but on a lower floor. In 2008 it was a brilliant premiere published by almost all the leading architecture and design media in Russia. The project has picked up many awards. Four years later za bor architects and Yandex had decided to repeat the success on a larger scale – Yandex Saint-Petersburg office II is almost twice as large as the previous one – it houses the entire fourth floor of the building and has a corridor about 200 meters long (total floor area 3310 sqm), but size doesn’t matter, clients wanted an «extraordinary office like no other»

Article source: Studio Pacific Architecture

These public toilets are located at the Synergy Plaza in the Kumutoto Precinct, situated at the northern-most end of Wellington’s waterfront. As well as taking into account practical considerations such as security, hygiene and vandalism, the brief was to create a structure with a sculptural form, something iconic, highly visible and unusual that was also well integrated into the visual and historical context of the surrounding precinct.
