MILLS, THE TOY MANAGEMENT HOUSE in Melbourne, Australia by Austin Maynard Architects

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

Article source: Austin Maynard Architects

In a nutshell

She’s a senior executive and now a new mum. For her and her newborn baby she wanted a light-filled home that could hide the mess. We gave her a floor that was a giant toy-box.

The what

Mills is an extension to a one level weatherboard terrace in Melbourne. The original facade and front 2 rooms of the terrace remain. One of those rooms has been altered to incorporate a study and a bathroom. A large lightwell separates the original structure from the new extension. The extension has two bedrooms and a bathroom above an open kitchen, living, dining space.

Mills is a complex home, full of ideas, however there are 2 core elements.

  1. The floor is a giant toy box.
  2. The rear facade filters and softens the strong sunlight that had previously dominated the backyard.

The building is located in the upper part of the town. It backs onto the woods, forming the final outlying limit of the built-up area. Echoing the open landscape, it faces to Belfort Lion on the hilltop opposite. In this strong context, the building offers its solidity, an almost opaque mass of grey concrete.

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

Article source: Evolution Design AG

The Swiss architecture and design practice Evolution Design, in close collaboration with the client Swiss Life, created 46 individual 2.5-4.5 room maisonettes and flats with a unique concept.

The aim was to develop flats, which would go beyond the functionality and offer an ideal added value as well as have their own identity. This approach responds to the increasing need of individuality and plurality in our current society. Therefore the development of KISS’s design put the future tenant and his personal lifestyle at the centre of its thinking.
