3.1 Phillip Lim MICROCOSM in Tokyo, Japan by Schemata Architects / Jo Nagasaka

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Article source: Schemata Architects / Jo Nagasaka

This is 3.1 Phillip Lim 2014 Pop- Up store at Shinjuku Isetan, which opens from April 2014 for six months.
This time the shop is located on the third floor of the department store, which had a space with a strong character. We attempt to make five renewals in 6 months, and at this stage we have done two renewals.
In this project, we focus on the brand philosophy of 3.1 Phillip Lim. Several sets of “almost” opposing words are given. “Almost” is the keyword that represents the wide scope of their design directions, and also it liberates their ways of thinking. The keywords are as follows.

CABANE de ZUCCa SHIBUYA PARCO in Tokyo, Japan by Jo Nagasaka/Schemata Architects

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Article source: Jo Nagasaka/Schemata Architects

This is the renovation of CABANE de ZUCCa SHIBUYA PARCO. When commissioned for the project, my initial thought was “Unbelievable….Can’t be true!”, because the CABANE de ZUCCa flagship in Omotesando was the shop I admired most when I was a boy fresh out of high school, although I was not a fashion-conscious type. I didn’t dare to enter but only peeked inside from the street, and I was intrigued and fascinated by the simple yet sophisticated shop design composed of galvanized steel frames-such material was rarely used for a shop interior during that time. The impression of the shop space still remains vivid in my memory.

TAKAHASHI HIROKO OSHIAGE STUDIO in Tokyo, Japan by Jo Nagasaka/Schemata Architects

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Article source: Jo Nagasaka/Schemata Architects

We renovated the old steel building, originally used as a factory / office, into a workspace for an artist to use for the next several decades. In order to improve the building performance, we applied fireproof coating and structural reinforcement. The construction of the original building was based on the value of “quantity over quality.” As a result, you can see various gaps and distortions all over the building after 40 years, which are made even more clearly visible by newly applied coating and finishes. We intend to transform these gaps and distortions into unique spaces where one encounters unexpected experiences.

Article source: Schemata Architects / Jo Nagasaka

I designed slightly oversized furniture for a relatively high space (with 6-meter ceiling height),  containing fitting rooms, hanger racks and a stock room. And it is comprised of industrial materials commonly used in construction sites such as FRP piping, wooden boxes and steel frames.

Toshin Satelite Preparatory School in Kobe, Japan by Matsuya Art Works.co.ltd.

Sunday, November 9th, 2014

Article source: Matsuya Art Works.co.ltd.

The building designed as the new school building for the Toshin Satellite Preparatory School is a rental property in an area with a high concentration of girls’ schools, with our client, Matsuo Gakuin, occupying the building as a tenant. The building in question faces a bustling shopping street which also serves as a busy school route for students. The exterior of the building facing the shopping district is made entirely of glass. It was anticipated that the impression created by the interior design of the building, visible to students passing by the glass exterior, would have a positive impact on increasing student enrollment numbers.

Cascades of Lights in San Jose, Costa Rica by Benjamin Garcia Saxe

Saturday, November 1st, 2014

Article source: Benjamin Garcia Saxe

Framing and fading the view become guidelines for the imagination; where an escape from the city is built and transported into a fictional world that is dancing with the wind, and light plays absorbed by its threads that catch between their frames a changing landscape.
